English School, late 19th century PORTRAIT OF JOHN KEMP-WELCH SEATED IN AN ARMCHAIR HOLDING A MONOCLE Oil on canvas 127 x 102cm. John Kemp-Welch was a wine merchant from Bath, when he and William Evill purchased the Schweppes Company from R A Sparkes. In 1834, the firm held leasehold premises in Berners Street, Riding House Lane, Bridge Street Bristol and Friar Gate Derby. One of the first innovations of the new team was Schweppes Aerated Lemonade, first introduced in 1835. This was a quite radical change, as for the previous fifty years Schweppes had concentrated on producing only soda water and artificial mineral waters like seltzer water. In 1836, the company was honoured to receive a warrant of appointment as manufacturers of soda water to Their Royal Highnesses the Duchess of Kent and the Princess Victoria. In August 1837, a new warrant of appointment was granted by Queen Victoria as purveyors of soda water.
Approximately 15 pieces of various cranberry glassware including wine flagon, oil lamp, decanter and stopper, dressing table jar and cover, two vases, modern jug with clear glass handle, gilt overlaid cream jug, three piece cruet set, etc., together with a pink overlay milk glass lustre decorated with birds amongst foliage, and a tall clear glass candle holder (PART ILLUSTRATED)
