A fine 19th century hallmarked silver wine jug of neo Classical inspiration, high arched scrolling handle affixed to the body with leaf-style decoration, the main body of baluster form and engraved with ferns and with central engraved armorial, raised on spreading circular foot, maker's mark R H, (probably for Robert Harper), assayed London 1873, approx. 576g, 36cm high (including handle), small repair visible to outside of circular spreading foot and also less so underneath Provenance: This has come privately and as far as we understand it has been in private family ownership for many years. It has been cleaned fairly bright. Very nice pleasing neo classical shape with an elongated neck above the baluster body. Nice selection of five different hallmarks underneath the arched spout which appears in good condition. The integral hinged cover appears in good order overall with just a slight pin head sized “ding” to the edge where the rounded top turns up a little. The high arched handle again appears in good condition although a little rubbed to the decoration commensurate with age. The main body is very finely engraved with ferns in the tradition of the last quarter of the 19th Century. It is also engraved with an armorial which looks like the torso of a leopard upright and holding some kind of barley sheaf or similar. The baluster body leads to a slightly spreading circular foot which has been repaired at some stage. Evidence of this is showing on the section where the base of the baluster meets the foot, there is a 2/3cm section there which is prevalent as a repair and turning the jug over there is a small 1cm split emanating from the very inside of the base of the jug underneath outwards and this is the basis of the repair. Apart from this the jug is very stylish and appears in good honest genuine condition.
A delicately potted Chinese porcelain wine cup, the flower-head shaped top above an interior decorated in underglaze blue with a tree, flower and shrub etc., before a fence, the exterior of the body decorated with repeating lappets, raised upon a high circular foot (possibly 17th century) (6cm diameter )
Two similar 19th century clear-glass wine jugs of slender form; the first delicately engraved with thistles, leaves and an ecclesiastical stone monument entrance within further flowers, leaves etc.; the second jug also finely engraved and with a standing female Classical-style figure within a shell-shaped boat being pulled by a pair of leviathans upon water (both jugs dirty and uncleaned, the second jug with two small chips to the outside of the circular foot) (the larger jug 32.5cm including handle) These jugs are not perfect. The jug with the female classical style figure has a finger nail sized chip on the outside of the bottom of the circular foot rim with one further smaller chip opposing in a similar area. The other jug with the delicate foliate engraving appears in good general overall order with no chips, cracks or restoration noted although both jugs appear to be extremely dirty. The two chips look like the only damage with this lot.
