A George III Irish Silver Wine-Funnel and Stand, by William Thompson, Dublin, 1796 oval and with reeded rim, with shaped clip, the funnel and stand each engraved with the badge of the Caithness Legion within thistlesthe funnel 14.5cm high, the stand 12.2cm wide, total weight 6oz 1dwt, 189gr (2)The Caithness Legion were founded by Sir Benjamin Dunbar in 1794. While originating in Caithness, the legion was sent to Ireland where they remained until 1802 and presumably they commissioned the present funnel while there. For a table-spoon by James Erskine of Aberdeen, circa 1800, also engraved with the badge of the Caithness Legion see lot 2225.The funnel and stand each fully marked. There is some wear to the marks but each is in general legible. There is some overall surface scratching and wear, consistent with age and use. The surface is somewhat bright.

A Louis XV French Provincial Silver Wine-Taster or Tasse à Vin, by Germain Dezeustre, dit Durand, in Collaboration With Benoit Julien, Trévoux, Juridiction de Lyon, Before 1760 the bowl tapering cylindrical and on milled short foot, with serpent handle, the rim engraved 'C Bauchaine'11cm wide over handle, 8.5cm diameter, 3oz 17dwt, 120grGermain Dezeutre seems to have specialised in making wine-tasters or tasse à vin such as the present example, often in collaboration with other silversmiths and typically engraved with the name of its owner. Indeed a number of examples are recorded by M. Chalabi, M.-R. Jazé-Charvolin, et al. in the exhibition catalogue L'orfèvrerie de Lyon et de Trévoux de XVe au XXe siècle, Paris, 2000, p. 127 and p. 261, fig. 100.Marked under base. The marks are generally clear. There is some overall surface scratching and wear, consistent with age and use. The bowl is rather bruised and the foot is pushed up slightly into the body.

A Louis XV French Provincial Silver Wine-Taster or Tasse à Vin, by Jean Beamont, Château-Gontier, Juridiction d'Angers, 1747-1752 the bowl tapering circular and with cast serpent handle, the rim engraved 'C Thareav D Av May'10.8cm wide over handle, 8.2cm diameter, 2oz 13dwt, 83grMarked under base. There is some wear to the marks but each is still legible. There is some overall surface scratching and wear, consistent with age and use. The wear is noticeable as a softening to the high points and engraving. There are some bruises overall.

The marks are generally clear. There is some minor surface scratching and wear, consistent with age and use. Rocks very slightly when placed on a flat surface.

The marks are generally clear. There is some overall surface scratching and wear, consistent with age and use. One is lacking the suspension chain. One 'Madeira' label is somewhat bright and has a split between the 'D' and 'E'. Ther 'Madeira' label which is lacking the chain is missing some of the piercred between the 'M' and 'A'. The 'Port' and 'Sherry' labels are each missing sections of the piercing.

A Pair of Victorian Silver Plate Ice-Buckets or Wine-Coolers, by Elkington and Co., Birmingham, Probably 1869 each formed as a ribbon-tied simulated wood bucket, each side applied with a shield, one side engraved with the badge of the Royal Lancashire Rifles Militia, the other engraved with an inscription with the names of differing donors21.6cm high (2)Provenance:Sold by Order of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers to Benefit the Fusiliers' Aid Society (13 January Jewellery, Watches and Silver sale, lots 2273-2307 and Antiques and Interiors sale, 5 January 2024 lots 1-16).The inscription reads 'Presented to the Officer's Mess 7th Royal Lancashire Militia', one further engraved 'by Lieut W. E. H. Steeds' and the other 'by Capt'n H. Crump'.The Royal Lancashire Militia was first raised just before the Crimean War. As part of the Childers reforms of 1881 it was incorporated as the 3rd Battalion of the newly formed Lancashire Fusiliers. Marked underneath. The marks are generally clear. There is some overall surface scratching and wear, consistent with age and use. The wear is noticeable as a loss to the silver plate which has significant wear.There was presumably originally a collar on each which is now lacking.
