Small Japanese Edo period ceramic chaire or tea caddy for matcha, 18th to 19th century. Darkly glazed Seto Ware, stoneware with a splash of white. Impressed stamp along the unglazed lower edge. With a wooden box.Stoneware; height: 3 in x diameter: 2 1/4 in. Box; height: 4 1/4 in x width: 3 3/4 in x depth: 3 3/4 in.Condition: No visible cracks, chips, losses, or restorations. Light wear throughout consistent with age and use. Some losses to the painted interior of the lid; some wine-colored stains along the top of the lid, possibly original. Some wear, discoloration, and partial tags affixed to the wooden box. Wear to the ties.
Imperial Yongzheng Chinese mother-of-pearl inlaid wine cup, possibly a sample. The intricately detailed yet subtle form and the interior gilt are positive signs for imperial, and the exclusive geometric patterns of six different panels are best appreciated in the Yongzheng period.Height: 1/2 in x diameter: 2 in.Condition: No major bends, breaks or restorations. There are few minute losses to the mother-of-pearl inlay particularly along the lower rim. There is light wear to the exterior throughout. To the interior there are cracks to the gilt lacquer that do not extend to the exterior. There is wear and losses to the gilt interior throughout. There is a minute spot along the exterior which may be an accretion or a small restoration attempt. Light wear to the footrim.
