Lots 299, 300 and 301 were bought by the vendor from The Dower House, Tewkesbury and whilst they do not have labels and the capsules are plain, there is reasonable evidence the port dates from 1871 (bottled in the 1970s); please ask for further details. One bottle from this collection was previously opened; the cork for which had the date of 1871 and Cabral which is Serafim Cabral of Quinta de Loueiro. Lot 136
c. 2000-1000 BC, Amlash culture. Bronze vessel with slightly out-turned rim, sloping neck, globular body, squat foot, L-shaped spout and strap handle surmounted by a stylised beast projection. Numerous applied spheres around the base of the spout create a grape-like effect, perhaps suggesting this vessel was used for pouring wine. The Amlash culture refers to an assortment of historic materials and periods in Northern Iran, enduring for many centuries. Good condition; beautiful patina. 1300-1200 BC. Shang dynasty. A beautiful bronze jia tripod vessel comprising a flaring rim, inward sloping neck, flaring shoulder and flat bottom supported by three wedge-shaped legs. A single strap handle is attached to one side of the vessel and two posts with conical casts rise from the rim, perhaps in imitation of mushrooms. A decorative frieze runs around the neck of the vessel, just above the shoulder, and depicts stylised taotie masks. The taotie are mythological creatures commonly appearing in ancient Chinese art, where they are commonly associated with the Four Evils of the World, a motif fitting for a vessel that would have been used for holding food on ritual or ceremonial occasions. Jia with this form and decoration are typical of the Anyang period (1300-1030 BC) and a comparable example can be seen in Shang Ritual Bronzes in the National Palace Museum Collection, Taipei, 1998, pp. 152-7, no. 9. The artefact is fully authenticated with XRF analysis by an independent Belgian laboratory. 1045–771 BC. Western Zhou Dynasty. A bronze wine vessel known as a You, comprising a detachable domed lid with cylindrical handle top, piriform body, flaring foot and strap handle. The object features two bands of intricate geometric patterns, one on the neck and one on the lid, as well as horned zoomorphic terminals at either end of the strap handle. A you or yu, is a type of Chinese bronze vessel for wine that is characterised by a handle and knobbed lid, as in this example. Such items would have been used during ceremonial banqueting amongst the aristocracy. Excellent condition; beautiful patina. The artefact is fully authenticated with XRF analysis by an independent Belgian laboratory. All samples correspond to the metal content of the period specified; no modern trace elements were detected in the patina; expertly cleaned and conserved. Original vintage midcentury modern advertising poster for a French wine producer Dauphin. Fun image of a man looking at a poster of a fis looking at a bottle of wine with text: Le Vins Dauphin - Dauphin wines. Le cellier des Dauphins is a brand of wine from the Rhone valley , created in 1967 by a union of cooperators , the Union des Vignerons des Cotes du Rhone. Le cellier des Dauphins owes its name to the geographical location of the first cellars belonging to the Union des vignerons des coasts du Rhone, located in Drome Provencale in the southernmost part of Dauphine. The brand initially brought together a union of cooperatives to which the cellars of Nyons , Saint-Maurice-sur-Eygues , Saint-Pantaleon-les-Vignes , Sainte-Cecile-les-Vignes , Serignan-du-Comtat , Suze-la -Rousse , Tulette and Vinsobres . The merger with the union of winegrowers from the Enclave des papes , where the cooperative cellars of Puymeras , Richerenches and Valreas created a major wine producer. Inspection under UV light shows fluorescence to areas of the glaze on the elephant, such as the interior of the ears, the base of one tusk, and the underside. N.B. A SILVER VICTORIAN WINE COOLER, JOHN SAMUEL HUNT FOR HUNT & ROSKELL, LATE STORR & MORTIMER, LONDON, 1860of classical urn form, designed with highly stylized and ornate grapevine motifs, with twin entwined branch handles, the flaring rim with overhanging fruiting grapevines atop conforming openwork body, the entwined branch stem spreading on to four leaves, all atop an incurved square pedestal base with scrolling acanthus feet, with plain liner, marked with 925 lion passant standard, Queen Victoria duty mark, written and "ISH crowned" maker's marks, model number 395, incised ENGLAND, D15 under base, a grape leaf on verso additionally marked with leopard head town mark and date cypher; overall height: 39 cm (15 3/8 in.), weight: 4.45 kg (143 ozt)CONDITIONThe cooler and its liner are in overall excellent original condition.
