‡ TWO DAMASCUS TILES, OTTOMAN SYRIA, 18TH CENTURYunderglaze painted fritware, depicting a youth holding a leafy sprig and scent bottle(?) and a maiden holding a bottle and wine-cup, each within a lobed medallion on striped ground, stylised clouds in each corner22cm squareProvenance: European private collectionThese unusual tiles are from a small group, examples of which have occasionally appeared on the art market over the last few decades. None remain in situ. The style of the figures closely resembles 17th century ‘Kubachi’ ceramics from Persia, although the colours, technique and composition suggest 18th century Syrian origin. There are three tiles of this type in the Victoria and Albert Museum, 386 1880, 531 1900 & 530 1900.

An interesting Nodding Advertising Teddy Bear for Maynards Wine Gums, German 1952, golden mohair covered bear with inserted brown glass eyes, moulded plastic nose and hinged lower jaw with moulded tongue, weighted nodding head, jointed at shoulders, felt pads, holding a wicker basket, mounted on red wooden base, opening flap to back, nodding mechanism operated by electric motor (detached), generally very good condition, 26 ¾” (68cm) high including base.
