Full title: A Chinese monochrome white-glazed bowl, Jinlu Dajiao Tan Yong 金箓大醮壇用 mark, JiajingDescription:Dia.: 9 cm - H.: 4,5 cm Provenance: - A Belgian private collection.- A South-German private collection. Ref.: - The British Museum, registration no. PDF,B.675 for an almost identical cup. (direct link available on rm-auctions.com) - A similar bowl, dated Xuande, is in the National Palace Museum of Taiwan. (direct link available on rm-auctions.com) Presented in a blue-lined glass-front display box, which dates back to the period of the Republic of China (1912-1949).In the well of the bowl, we find the character cha (tea) within a double circle in underglaze blue. On the base is the mark 'Jinlu Dajiao Tan yong' (for use on the Gold Record Great Sacrifice Altar) within a circle, the cobalt of a deep blue tone. Both the Taoshuo and the Jingdezhen Taolu mention a tanzhan (altar cup). The Taoshuo first quotes a passage from the Bowu Yaolan (Select Items from Things Surveyed): Small white cups, inscribed with the characters 'tea', 'wine', hot water with dates' and hot water with ginger respectively. They were Daoist ceremonial vessels for Shizong [Jiajing Emperor] and were called altar cups. They are not as good as those from the Xuande period. These cups from the Jiajing period exist in three sizes: large, medium, and small. Those with the "tea" character are of good quality, while those inscribed ‘hot water with ginger’ are of inferior quality. They are inscribed "Jinlu Dajiao Tan Yong". In Daoist terminology Jinlu is an edict from the High Lord. The Jinlu dajiao (gold register), the huanglu dajiao (yellow register), and the yulu dajiao (jade register) are three important sacrificial ceremonies. The present cup (and excavated shards) provides important information as to what was placed on the altar on such occasions. Condition:The absence of a condition report does not imply that a lot is in perfect condition.Condition reports are provided on request. Lot 250

Full title: A rare Chinese bronze cylindrical tripod censer with Arabic inscription, Zhengde mark and of the periodDescription:H.: 8 cm - Dia.: 10 cm Weight: 1084 grams Bronze censers decorated with Arabic inscriptions came to influence the making of a distinctive group of heavily potted blue-and-white porcelains, all bearing Zhengde imperial marks on the bases and the body decorated with Arabic or Persian inscriptions. Jessica Harrison-Hall in Ming Porcelain in the British Museum, London, 2001, p. 188, notes that it is possible that these wares 'were used by literate Muslim eunuchs at court or by the emperor, who was fascinated by foreign scripts.' For examples of blue-and-white wares with Arabic or Persian inscription in the British Museum see ibid., pls. 8:3-8:11, including an incense burner (8:11) with six roundels each bearing an Arabic phrase. Two ceramic censers of this shape, also with Arabic inscriptions in panels are illustrated in Kaikodo Journal, XXIV. Material Witness, New York, 2008, p. 166, where it is explained that the form derives from Han period prototypes known as zun or lian which were used for containing wine. Provenance:- A Belgian private collection.- Acquired at TEFAF Maastricht from Galerie Lamy, Brussels, in 2014, accompanied by their certificate of authenticity. (as visible on the Alain Truong blog - link)- A Dutch private collection, before 2010. Ref.:- Sotheby's, New York, March 15, 2017, lot 561, for a similar example with a continuous text band. (2)Provenance: From the collection of Joseph Rondina, New York, United States, acquired before 2000. Joseph Rondina (1927-2022) was born into a first-generation Florentine-American family in Auburn, upstate New York. Returning to the U.S. after being stationed in Berlin at the end of the Second World War, he studied at the Whitman School of Design before opening Joseph Rondina Antiques on Madison Avenue in Manhattan's Upper East Side in 1957. In the beginning, his interests focused primarily on European 18th-century decorative arts and furniture, over time developing to include Chinese, Korean, Indian, Thai, Cambodian, Persian and Japanese art, bringing a more esoteric and exotic style to the market. His clientele included stars of the stage and screen, royalty, notables, dignitaries, and denizens of the social register from the United States and abroad.Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Wear, casting flaws, signs of weathering and erosion, corrosion, encrustations, nicks, scratches, losses. The ancient bitumen filling normally found inside such weights is lost.Weight: 161 g and 140 gDimensions: Length 5.8 cm (each) Weights of this type were used to hold down the corners of woven mats used for seating or for the board game liubo. Inlaid animal-form weights were also discovered in the tomb of Dou Wan, consort of Liu Sheng, Prince Jing of Zhongshan (d. 113 BC), alongside food and wine vessels. They were usually made in the shape of animals, often coiled to form a circle, or in the shape of human figures, and even mountains. Usually made of bronze, and often sumptuously decorated in gilding, or inlaid with gold, silver and gemstones, these weights conveyed the high social status of its owner. The tiger is one of the oldest and most revered animals in Chinese history. According to Han mythology, the tiger symbolized the Western cardinal point, and in conjunction with the Green Dragon of the West, Vermilion Bird of the South and Black Tortoise of the North, positioned the burial within the spatial-temporal features of the universe. It is possible that tigers were deemed to protect the tomb occupant against the malign influences they may encounter in their afterlife.Literature comparison:A related coiled feline shape can be seen in a pair of gilt-bronze weights, and in a set of four agate weights, all dated Western Han dynasty, illustrated by M. Wang et al., in the exhibition catalog, A Bronze Menagerie: Mat Weights of Early China, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston, 2006, pp. 76-7, nos. 1 and 2. See related excavated examples of bronze recumbent tiger paperweights, in the Shenmu County Museum, illustrated in Bronzes from Northern Shaanxi, Vol. V, Chengdu, 2009, p. 964-966. The face with scroll and ruyi designs, and the pierced beak slightly agape. The gui vessel with matching cover and small chilong handles incised with key fret, the rim encircled by a band of stylized dragons. The translucent stone of a pale apple-green tone with icy inclusions.Provenance: London trade. A noted French private collection, acquired from the above. Condition: Very good condition with minor old wear, small nicks and nibbles. The stone with natural inclusions and fissures, some of which may have developed into small hairline cracks. It is rare to find a complete ensemble of four pieces, such as in the present example, with nothing ever having been lost.Weight: 514.6 g (excl. stand), 591.3 g (incl. stand) Dimensions: 14.5 cm (excl. stand), 17 cm (incl. stand) With a fitted wood stand, finely carved in openwork with lingzhi and rockwork, showing a fine naturally grown patina overall. A WOMAN'S JADE-GREEN-GROUND KESI SILK 'CHRYSANTHEMUM' INFORMAL ROBE, QING DYNASTYExpert's note: The colors jade-green and turquoise are usually reserved for high ranking concubines and female members of the Imperial family.China, 19th century. Finely worked with colorful leafy blossoming chrysanthemum sprays picked out in vibrant shades of yellow, salmon, and white against a turquoise green ground. The black-ground collar similarly decorated in three-blue silk with vases filled with lingzhi, blossoming lotus and peonies borne on leafy scrolling vines, above a parallel border stitched with a band of stylized butterflies framed by floral bands. The interior lined with bright pink silk.Provenance: New York trade. Acquired from the estate of a noted rug-dealer.Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, soiling and creasing, few loose threads.Dimensions: Length 135 cm, Width 154.5 cm (across sleeves) The kesi technique is a particularly intricate way of introducing pattern within the weave of the fabric: the various colors are woven on separate bobbins creating the 'cut' effect at the boundaries between the colors, hence the name kesi or 'cut silk'. The technique is extremely time-consuming and skilled, achieving a reverse that is often as well-presented as the front of the fabric.Chrysanthemums, symbolizing happiness and vitality, are a popular autumn flower in China and carry special significance during lunar new year celebrations. Since ancient times, people have drunk wine from their fermented petals. Many ancient scholars and philosophers have written about how these flowers promote long life, health, and happiness. Chrysanthemums are mentioned in Chinese historical records as far back as the 15th century BC.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related green-ground kesi silk robe with chrysanthemums, 142 cm long, dated to the Tongzhi period, in the Victoria & Albert Museum, accession number T.79-1966.Auction result comparison: Type: Related Auction: Christie's London, 12 May 2015, lot 205 Price: GBP 10,625 or approx. The function of yi has been documented since the earliest stages of Chinese history. Yi were used together with water basins, pan, in ritual ceremonies to cleanse hands. It was stipulated in one of the ancient Chinese classics, the Book of Rites (Liji), that an elder would pour water from the yi for the ritual performers to wash their hands before proceeding with sacred rites, and the clan's junior member would concurrently carry a pan to collect the water. Yi had been a tangible symbol reflecting the ritual etiquette of royalty and the nobility during the Zhou dynasty.Bronze yi, in addition to serving as water implements during ritual ceremonies, also functioned as wine vessels in the Eastern Zhou dynasty. According to the inscription of the Spring and Autumn period Lu Da Si Tu Yuan Yi, discovered in Qufu county during the Republic period, currently preserved in the Shandong Museum, Jinan, the vessel is identified as a 'drinking vessel' (see Zhu Fenghan, Zhongguo qingtongqi zonglun [A Comprehensive Survey of Chinese Bronzes], vol. 1, Shanghai, 2009, p. 288).Literature comparison:Compare to a related archaic bronze yi of this from in the Palace Museum, illustrated in Bronzes in the Palace Museum, Beijing, 1999, p. 219, pl. 211.
