DUMAS ALEXANDRE: Fils (1824-1895) French Author and Dramatist. A very good A.L.S., Ale.D, four pages, 8vo, Paris, 3rd April 1846, to Joseph Autran, in French. Dumas sends to his correspondent and friend a very interesting letter and lengthy poem, reporting about his sadness and loneliness after ending a relationship, and states `Your journal has arrived in the middle of home sorrows as eight days ago the one it was sent to and I have put an end to our relationship. If I tell you that it did not affect me you would believe me because you know I am quite indifferent. But I rather be frank and foolishly tell you that I have never ever in my life suffered as much as these three days after the break, which has only been a consequence of reason and money.´ further saying `It rains my dear friend. Today is Sunday. It is 6h in the morning. It rains and all drives you poetry, so I will write this verses for you´. Dumas continues with a lengthy joyful poem of 42 verses, stating in part `..à la femme aux bras nus qui chante et qui faronne - à l´hotesse aux yeux noirs que je vis bien souvent - livrer auprès de moi ses anglaises au vent -… comme les fleurs font rayonner les femmes - ou bien dans une barque oublient les deux rames - ou pores d´une maitresse à la fin d´un beau jour - écouter la nature en lui parlant d´amour…´ Dumas concludes coming back to his sadness and says `The bottom of my joy is no doubt sadness. My heart is like the Bourgogne wine: the surface is fine, the bottom is dim. If you mix all it becomes bad….Reason is a good thing, but I have noticed that it only makes us doing unpleasant things..´ Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Dumas, bearing a red wax seal. A good content letter. VG £150-200 Joseph Autran (1813-1877) French Poet and Playwright, a close friend of Alexandre Dumas.
