1982 Souza PortOWC11x75cl In 1925 Alcino Viera de Souza decided to enter the Port business. Up until that time, his expertise was in the blending and aging of Ports. I believe that the art of blending Ports requires even more talent and experience than is required in making the wine itself. Mr. Viera took on a business partner as the company achieved some early success and he expanded slowly. His partner was the legendary Manuel Barros, who owned many other Port companies including Feist, Hutcheson, Feuerheerd, Rocha, Kopke, Alameida and of course, Barros. There proved to be excellent synergy between the two men, and Souza's Port business began to thrive. Unfortunately, in 1941, Mr. Souza passed away, leaving Barros as the sole owner of the company.

1977 Chianti Classico, Monte VertineOWC1x500clIt is hard to believe that fifty five years ago this famous winery was only the holiday home of an Italian industrialist who wanted to produce a few bottles of wine for friends as a hobby. And even more incredible is that he just wanted to know if it was okay and sent a few bottles to the Vinitaly in Verona, which were served there by the Chamber of Commerce Siena. It tasted so good even then, because the popularity was enormous and tempted Sergio Manetti to quit his highly paid job and become a winemaker. The rest is an incomparable success story. Today the wines of Montevertine are among the absolute top wines of Italy. From 1977 to 1981, they produced Chianti Classico with the aim of competing at the highest levels on a national and international basis. However, by 1981, Sergio was finding the Chianti DOC legislation too restrictive (producers were not allowed to use 100% Sangiovese and were required to blend in white grape varieties). Sergio wished to produce a premium 'Tuscan' wine that truly conveyed the unique terroir of the area and its affect on the genuine Italian grape, Sangiovese. He was left with no choice but to leave the Chianti Consorzio and produce wine under the Vino da Tavola classification. His rebellion led him to become probably the first to produce a 'Super Tuscan' and the rest is now history... 'Le Pergole Torte'

2009 Clos de Tart, Grand CruOWC6x75clSoft floral and toasty oak notes add breadth to the notably ripe nose, indeed this is much riper than its 2010 counterpart. Aromas of plum, chocolate and subtle spice notes merge into supple but broad-shouldered flavors that possess good energy and excellent depth on the velvety yet very firm finish that is at once supported and shaped by the solidly structured, indeed even robust finish. This is a very serious wine that was expressly built to age and it should improve for out to 20 years if kept in quality storage conditions. Alan Meadows
