He took over Elva in 1964 and began building and then servicing McLaren sports-racers. In 1974 he entered eight Formula 1 grand prixes with his Trojan T103-Cosworth, recording a best result of tenth place, before taking over the Suzuki works motor cycle racing team, recruiting Barry Sheene, and securing the 1976 and 1977 World Championship titles. Over time he built up an important collection of classic cars and in later years enthusiastically participated in heritage races and revues.
