Patrick Fisher 1930-1987, English, still-life with model horse, violin and wine bottles, oil on canvas, signed verso, PROVENANCE: From the Derek Sorrell Collection. Purchased from Peter Hall, nephew and executor to Patrick Fisher. Patrick Fisher studied at Colchester School of Art and after returning from an Art Scholarship in Spain in the mid 1950's devoted himself to painting. His paintings are all local subjects to the Harwich area including Marinescapes and rural scenes. Examples of his work can be found in Private collections in New York, South Africa, France and Spain. h: 24 x w: 30 in.

Admiral Mitford's box of decanters and glasses, c.1840, comprising: six 2 1/2 pint decanters with floral gilt painted shoulders, 4 1/2in. x 3 1/4in. x 8in. high; six 3/4 pint decanters with floral gilt painted shoulders, 3in. x 2 1/4in. x 5in. high, all with stoppers and some bearing contemporary hand-written contents labels; together with a pair of 3 1/2in. tumblers; a pair of 5 1/2in. tapering wine glasses; and a 3in. liqueur glass, contained in a bespoke rustic metal-bound oak case, with hasp lock, bearing V.R. Royal Cipher. Provenance: Admiral Robert Mitford, (relative of the Author Miss Mary Russell Mitford), born Mitford Castle, Northumberland, 26th January, 1786, joined the navy in 1794, commissioned in 1802, promoted to Post Captain 1813. Rear Admiral 1846, Vice Admiral 1855 and Admiral 1861, married Margaret Dunsmure in 1830 and died on the 15th June, 1870. It is believed that Admiral Mitford was commissioned by Queen Victoria to collect a consignment of Madeira and sail it to England via the Equator where the heat was supposed to enhance the wine. The box and decanters passed through the Dunsmure family and by descent to the vendor. See illustration
An attractive Chinese porcelain wine pot cover and stand, the globular pot with loop handle and short spout, decorated in black, blue and red enamels with gilt details depicting exotic goldfish and waves beneath a band of runes, either side with a crane amid clouds, the hexagonal fluted stand decorated en suite. 12 cm high. Eighteenth century (cracked). (3) * The subject of the decoration is particularly auspicious.The swimming fish may be described as ‘goldfish’, in Chinese jin Yu, which provides a homophone for ‘an abundance of gold’. This the presentation of a wine pot such as this implies wishes for great fortune.
