Heavily influenced by the work of Jan Davidsz. De Heem (Utrecht 1606-1684 Antwerp), van Son most likely encountered the work of de Heem in his native city during his formative years. Disguised as an old nurse, Juno advised Semele to ask Jupiter to make love to her in his full and divine glory for one time. The power of Jupiter turned the young lady into ashes.
