8 bottle of wine to include 2 bottles of 1982 vintage Chateau Les Templiers Lalande-De-Pomerol, 1 bottle of 1996 Chateau Latour-Laguens Bordeaux Superieur, 1 bottle of 1978 Chateau Vincent Canon Fronsac, 1 bottle of 1993 Chateau Corbin Saint Emilion, 1 bottle of 1990 Chateau Monlot Capet St Emilion Grand Cru, 1 bottle of 1987 Chateau Talbot Saint-Julien, 1 bottle of 1997 Muscat Beaumes De Venise (8)
Grant by William Longe, - notary, and his wife, Isabella, and others of a demolished... notary, and his wife, Isabella, and others of a demolished tenement in the parish of St. Mary le Tower, Ipswich, adjacent to le Tymbyrmarket , charter in Latin on parchment [England (Ipswich), dated 21 March 1479] Single-sheet charter, 12 lines in a compact scrolling secretarial hand, opening with a small initial S formed of decorative penwork flourishes, one red wax seal and three tags wanting seals (one tag cut from another document), some small stains and folds, else good condition, 115+20 by 285mm. The figures named here include an array of prominent figures from late medieval Ipswich, and attest to the variety of roles individuals could have, including Robert Wymball (a clothier as well as lawyer, notary and bailiff) and William Wattys (a seller of wine and ale, as well as the coroner).
Three bottles of Clos des Papes 1990, Chateauneuf Du Pape rouge, two with very high fills, one 1.5cm, lightly cellar-soiled labels. In recent years this domaine has risen to close to the top of the ultra-competitive tree in this famous old appellation; quite an achievement considering the Avril family eschew the production of micro-cuvees of super-concentrated wines intended to catch the attention of influential wine critics. Vintages older than 20 years are hard to find so these are not to be missed for fans of mature Chateauneuf.
A six bottle assortment of mature moelleux Vouvray from Domaine Huet including one La Haut Lieu 1985, 2cm; two Clos du Bourg 1988, high fills; two Clos du Bourg 1989, 1.5cm, 2cm; and one Cuvee Constance 1989, 1-1.5cm. The latter is Domaine Huet's rarest wine, made only in the best years from a selection of the three vineyards Le Mont, Clos du Bourg, and Le Haut Lieu. This particular vintage was described by Michael Broadbent in 'Vintage Wine' (2002, p320), as the 'most perfect Loire wine I have ever tasted'.
One bottle of Chateau Petrus 1982, Pomerol; into neck, light scuffs to label, minor nick to bottom of capsule, Eurocave stored. The most expensive wine of Bordeaux, and here in one of its greatest vintages. It is remarkable to think, however, that Petrus is essentially a post-war success; in the capable hands of the Moueix family, Pomerol in general and Petrus in particular became, respectively, the most sought-after appellation and wine in the world. Moreover in a then conservative trade obsessed with hierarchy, all was achieved without the need for a class system.
A four-bottle assortment of the original 1855 first growths, all from the 1993 vintage, including one Chateau Lafite, Premier Cru Classe, Pauillac, with Wine Society slip label; one Chateau Latour, Premier Cru Classe, Pauillac, with Wine Society slip label; one Chateau Margaux, Premier Cru Classe, Margaux; and one Chateau Haut-Brion, Premier Cru Classe, Graves. Levels into neck or better, all of excellent appearance with lightly cellar-soiled labels. Not perhaps a notably strong vintage, all first growths were however performing equally well in the early '90s so these would make for a fascinating, if slightly indulgent, horizontal tasting.
Four bottles including one Chateau Pichon Baron 1996, Pauillac; one Chateau Cantemerle 2003, Haut-Medoc; one Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 1998, Domaine Louis Latour; and one Pouilly-Fume 2004, Chateau de Tracy. This lot includes also two books: 'Michael Broadbent's Vintage Wine', Little Brown/Websters, 2002; and 'The Great Wines of France' by Clive Coates, Mitchell Beazley, 2005.
