Manuscript exercise book. A mathematics work book, written by Mary Cook, 1773, written in a fine copperplate hand (light strike-through in places), calligraphic title-page to each part, neatly written sums and mathematical exercises, final few pages with later lists of names and amounts, dated 1786-1805 (probably in same hand), a few possibly blank leaves torn out at rear (one partially), front free endpaper with large calligraphic name and date, front pastedown with later ink ownership name, original vellum, both covers a little bowed and marked, small 4to The book describes mathematical processes such as addition and multiplication, with numerous examples and exercises for each. Many tables of weights and measures are neatly written out, such as Apothecaries-weight, Troy-weight, Wine-measure, and Pence-tables. Example exercises include 'A Milliners Bill' and 'A Milkmaids Bill' and in the Subtraction section is the mathematical question: 'King Charles the Martyr, was beheaded in the year 1648; how many years is it since.' with the answer worked out as 125. Steadman (Ralph, illustrator). Treasure Island, by Robert Louis Stevenson, 1985, colour illustrations, half-title with red ink authorial presentation inscription and doodle (with mock date), all edges gilt, original leather gilt, front cover with gilt decoration, matching slipcase, 4to, together with Still Life with Raspberry or the Bumper Book of Steadman, 1st edition, 1969, numerous black & white illustrations, title with red ink authorial signature, with mock age and date, frontispiece with red ink moustache added to lower right face by Steadman, original boards, dust jacket with some tears and losses, 4to, and three other Steadman-related items: Adonis / A Mirror for the Twentieth Century, colour poster, signed by Steadman in gold ink lower right, 48.5 x 68.5cm (19 x 27ins), framed and glazed, plus another poster, Today the Struggle, and The Hunting of the Snark an Agony in Eight Fits, by Lewis Carroll, 1975 First item, limited edition 220/250 copies. The vendor informs us that at a literary festival he persuaded a reluctant Steadman to sign the first two items in red ink, over a glass of red wine. Apparently although the limitation of Treasure Island states 250 copies, only 50 or so were released as Steadman objected to the binding. (5)
