Frankreich - - Jean-Benjamin de Laborde. Französisches Meisterwerk des 18. Jahrhunderts in prachtvollem Einband. French masterpiece of the 18th century in splendid binding. 4 vols. With 4 frontispieces (including 1 title) and 100 engraved full-page illustrations. Wine-red morocco with gilt-stamped fillets, vignettes on both covers, corner fleurons, gilt standing and inner edges, gilt edges on three sides and marbled endpapers (scuffed, rubbed and bumped). - First edition. - Completely engraved, the text by Moria and Mademoiselle Vendôme and the pictures after Moreau Le Jeune in vol. 1, and after Le Barbier, Le Bouteux and Saint-Quentin in the 3 following ones. Among them the portrait of Laborde by Masquelier after Vivant Denon. - Published in 1773 and dedicated to Marie Antoinette, this deluxe edition contains texts by leading contemporary poets as well as more than a hundred engravings and hand-engraved scores for voice and harp or harpsichord. The work is emblematic of late 18th century France, embodying both the exaltation of the court and the enlightened mores of the philosophers. - One stanza with corrected engraving (vol. 2, p. 54), a few first leaves each somewhat glue-shaded and spotted. Overall very well preserved copies with numerous nuanced copper engraving illustrations.
