Du Maurier states that she has been 'a little fussed', explaining 'I had a feeling my Christmas mackeral to you had never turned up, as you had not mentioned it, very unlike you to forget if it had arrived….lo and behold, the carrier had not delivered it until after you had left. Such a pity.' although further continuing 'Anyway, it will be there to greet you on arrival, a small case of wine, and I'm hoping you have not left instructions saying "If any parcel turns up in my absence be all means feed to animals". Or the chickens will become a little dizzy.' The author further refers to mutual acquaintances and the lease of Menabilly ('I feel we are now plunged back into our insecurity….It's a disheartening start to New Year.'). VG Foy Quiller-Couch - daughter of British writer Arthur Quiller-Couch (1863-1944), and a life-long friend of Du Maurier.
