English School, 19th CenturyA naval officer's sketchbook from his time aboard HMS Asia in 1836 and 1838, including drawings and references to Athens, Piraeus, Aegina, Corinth and Maltainscribed '1836 Asia' (on label attached to one cover) and '1838 Asia' (on label attached to the other cover), extensively annotated in pencil throughoutpencil and watercolouralbum size 21.6 x 13.7cm (8 1/2 x 5 3/8in).Footnotes:HMS Asia was a Royal Navy 84-gun second rate ship of the line, launched on 19 January 1824 at Bombay Dockyard, Mumbai. She was sent to England and fitted out as flagship to Sir Edward Codrington, Commander-in-Chief Mediterranean, who took her out to join the fleet at Malta in 1826. Her first taste of action was the Battle of Navarino in October 1827 in which the Turks were defeated with extremely heavy losses and the eventual attainment of Greek Independence. From 1836-1841 HMS Asia was commanded by Captain William Fisher, travelling in the Mediterranean. There are several depictions of her, including one by Giovanni Schranz from the date of this album anchored in the Grand Harbour, Valetta, Malta in 1838 (Christie's, lot 27, 12 Nov 2014).This album, most likely compiled by an officer, is a fascinating record in watercolour and pencil of ports visited and people encountered by the artist and also some written accounts of excursions undertaken. These include:A rare and interesting study of a waterspout Pembroke off PantelleriaPrincess Charlotte and Wasp off MaltaSquadron becalmed in the Gulf, SmyrnaVanguard & Princess Charlotte running into Vourla Bay, Sept. 10/38'Faneromenis Salaminos, and a study of Joachim Prolegoumenos who was the son of the founder of the Faneromenis monsatery which was used by many of the leaders of the War of Independence, including Tzavelas , Makriyannis , Kriezotis ,Dimitri Ipsilantis, Giorgios Karaiskakis, to plot against the Ottomans and also used as a refuge for women and children.Card players in a caféNear land of Calimaki Bay, Acro CorinthOf Piraeus – vignettes of figures seen at the port and detailed artist's notes on Greek clothingStadium of Hadrian, AthensSciron & his bonesPeak of AeginaLanding at Aegina. This is probably modern day Ovitja in Athens, near Lycabetus Hill which can be seen in the distance of the scene. There is also a description of the Festa della Donna Carmeli and an amusing report of a visit to Corinth to obtain supplies 'On board without provisions – gambling and grumbling on board... Land at Monastery (Phaneromenis Salaminos) get eggs, water, wine & a sketch.'
