SOAPSTONE CARVING OF SEATED MAN WITH ATTENDANTSChinese carved stone figure, approx. 7" x 3" x 5", a depiction of the drunken poet Li Dai Bao reclining against his empty wine jug with his bare stomach exposed, while two acolytes busy themselves around him. The figure is carved from light honey-colored soapstone with small reddish intrusions, and rests on a dark carved wood stand. The figure likely dates from the nineteenth century. Some partially repaired damage near the figure's feet, with small pieces missing, else very good.
FIRST OPIUM WAR MILITARY FIGURESGood group of three letters executed by British military officers who fought in the First Opium War with China from 1839 to 1842. Includes: WALTER FANE (1828-1885) British Indian Army officer, raised a troop of irregular cavalry made up of Indian volunteers to fight in China, which became "Fane's Horse", a regiment that remains part of Pakistan's armed forces. A.L.S. "W. Fane", 1p. 8vo., [n.p., n.d.], Fane sends along some drawings (not present) to his correspondent, and asks that some books be returned to him. Folds, with mounting remnants on the verso, else very good. WITH: FREDERICK NICOLSON (1815-1899) British Royal Navy admiral, present aboard HMS BLONDE during translator and diplomat ROBERT THOM'S expedition up the Canton River to deliver British terms for open trade during the First Opium War. A.L.S. "F.W.E. Nicolson", 1p. 8vo., Gibraltar, Jan. 7, 1846. Nicolson writes from aboard HMS FANTOME to a wine merchant, in part: "I have to inform you that the wine & whiskey reached me a few days since & that they are highly approved of..." Folds, with some minor soiling and a biographical notation in pencil on the verso, else very good. WITH: ANTHONY STRANSHAM (1805-1900) Led the Royal Marines during the Battle of Canton in 1841. A.L.S. "A.B. Stransham", 1p. 8vo., [n.p.], March 13 [n.y.], to a Mrs. Nicholas, Stransham transmits a newspaper article. Signed boldly in black ink at the conclusion. Folds, mounting remnants and a biographical inscription in pencil on the verso, else very good.
A Chinese metal ritual wine jar and cover, with ring handles, by repute discovered by an archaeologist near Peking circa 1920, 32 cm high See illustration Condition report Report by GHBoth hoop handles present and seemingly intact, and mounts also seemingly intact. Generally appears to be in good shape with no obvious major dents or misshapeness. Cover also in reasonable condition with some small dents around the rim, but all three finials present and seemingly without repair or damage.Overall appears complete with heavy tarnishing and wear as you would expect from being dug up.
