To be Sold without ReserveWomen on a terrace, possibly an illustration from a Ragamala: Dipak Raga, Oudh, Mughal India, circa 1775, opaque pigments on paper heightened with gold, a scene on a terrace by moonlight, a lady richly attired in gold jama and scarf beckons to her attendant to bring her some wine, a gem-set gold table at her feet with vessels, her attendants behind seem to be very sleepy, and her musician appears to be resting perhaps due to the late hour, within border of gold flowers, 25.6 x 20.2cm. Provenance: Me Boigirard, vente Drouot, 24 March 1980, lot 37
Gilles Coignet by Sadeler - Sine Cerere et Baccho friget Venvs. / Description: Venus, Bacchus and Ceres. Venus seated at the foot of a tree at centre, her foot resting on a stone block, Bacchus at left with wine leaves in his hair, Ceres at right and seen from behind with vegetables in her arms, Cupid holding an arrow next to Venus. Engraving made and published by Raphael Sadeler after Gillis Coignet (1542-1599). Signed in lower corners of impression: "Gillis Coingnet inuentor." and "Raphael Sadler f. et excud.". In lower part on a stone block: "Sine Cerere et Baccho / friget Venvs.". / Dimensions: 19,80 x 24,70 / Condition: A good impression trimmed on plate border with traces of tread margins. A few closed defects near the borderline, restored with a paper fragment on the top stone visible near the bottom left corner and a paper strip on the backside of Bacchus. Albrecht Dürer Attr. - The sorceress and Ulysses - by Michel Wolgemut -1493 / Description: Panofsky attributes the drawing for this work to the Albrecht Dürer, who was working in the workshop of Wohlgemut and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff in the years 1486-1489 when many of the early designs for the Chronicle were made. About the subject: During his Odyssey, Ulysses rmet the golden-haired magician Circe who lived on the Aeaea Island in the Adriatic Sea. She lured the sailors to the island with her singing and gave them wine mixed with a magic potion. She did the same with Ulysses' s companions, transforming them into animals. But she did not manage to cast a spell on Ulysses who had taken an antidote. Then she accomplished his demand and turned his companions into humans again. Ulysses passed a year on Circe's island. Ulysses here referred to as Ulises in the caption above his head. Very sharp printed woodcut from the first German edition of Hartmann Schedel, "Liber Cronicarum", printed by Anton Koberger in Nuremberg in 1493. / Dimensions: 12,30 x 16,80 cm / Condition: Excellent condition. / Literature: The attribution by Panofsky to Dürer was mentioned in the work: ……. Markham (Gervase) The English house-vvife. Containing the inward and outward Vertues which ought to be in a compleate Woman. As her skill in Physicke, Surgery, Cookery..., title with woodcut printer's device, M2 with woodcuts of gauging marks for wine, woodcut head-pieces and decorative initials, without initial blank, lacking leaf F2, contemporary ink marginalia to D5v and F3, a few ff. with small chips to fore-edge repaired with tape, a couple times touching text but without loss, a few small rust-holes, affecting a letter of text to N2 and R4, the occasional small stain or light soiling, later half cloth, worn, joints cracked but holding, [Bitting p.309 (note); Poynter pp.128-131; Simon BG 1005; STC 17353], small 4to, Printed by Nicholas Okes for John Harison, 1631.⁂ An incredibly varied text, that includes receipts for various dishes, distillation, brewing, preserving wine, dying of wool, dairy produce, perfumes, hemp and flax, and even baldness and bad breath. It was originally published as Country Contentments, or English houswife in 1623.
