Heavily influenced by the work of Jan Davidsz. De Heem (Utrecht 1606-1684 Antwerp), van Son most likely encountered the work of de Heem in his native city during his formative years. Van Son's fruit still lifes, such as the present painting, are particularly indebted to the elder artist's work although van Son's works are characterised by a softer, more suffused lighting.A similar arrangement of the oysters, lower left, with the grapes behind, appears in a further work by van Son of two years earlier, which was offered at Sotheby's, London, 10 April 2013, lot 41.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
