Intaglio cut glass dessert service, with central gilded floral bosses surrounded by a diamond cut band and floral gilt border, comprising of eight plates and two tazzas, also a suite of eleven tumblers and twelve wine glasses with acid etched and gilded borders, (33) the tazzas measure 19.5cm diameter Condition report: No serious chips cracks or damages. There are very minor nicks to the cut edges of some of the drinking glasses and the as well as the dessert service. These nicks are all less than 1mm and hardly noticeable. The gilding is in good order with only very minor traces of wear to some of the dessert service and to one tumbler. One drinking glass has internal production faults or inclusions to the stem. Ω English School (second quarter 19th century) Portrait of a Lord Mayor seated before drapery, a landscape beyond Watercolour on ivory Inscribed verso Christopher Smith Esq MP for St Albans, Ld Mayor of London 1818, presented to … by his son N. Smith 12.7cm x 10cm (5in x 4in) In a plain brass rectangular frame Christopher Smith (died 1835) was born the son of a farmer near Abingdon-on-Thames. Having gone up to London to be inoculated against smallpox, he found himself working for a wine merchant who left him the business on his death. Smith's own sons were to continue the business after his own demise. As a member of the Draper's Company he became London councilman in 1800 and in 1807 was raised to the rank of Alderman. He was elected a Sheriff of London for 1807-08 and Lord Mayor of London for 1817-18. He was President of St Thomas' Hospital from 1818 to his death. In 1812 he was elected MP for St Albans, holding the seat until 1818. After being defeated in the election of that year, he was re-elected to the seat in 1820, sitting until 1830. He married twice and had two sons, Newman and Sebastian, and a daughter.
