JOSEPH THOMAS (EXH 1850-1853) JOSEPH BARROWS AND HIS CHILDREN IN THE GARDEN OF HANDSWORTH HALL signed and dated 1849, ink and watercolour, 52 x 57cm Provenance: The sitters, thence by descent to the present vendor. Joseph Barrows (1804-1890), a prominent citizen of Birmingham, one of the Street Commissioners (the forerunner to the Town Council) founded the firm of Joseph Barrows & Sons, Wine & Spirit Merchants. The business prospered to the extent that by 1849 the recently widowed Barrows had bought Handsworth Hall, a large 18th century home with extensive grounds. It has been the home of Anna Maria Sacheverell and Anne Gough and afterwards Joseph Grice, JP. It was demolished in the 1870s when the area was redeveloped. In fine condition in what could be the original early Victorian ornate gilt frame

A Chinese silver gilt, enamel and stone set wine ewer, goblets and tray probably mid-20th century, the ewer, goblets and borders of the tray chased with foliage and blossoms centered by turquoises on a matted ground, some foliage enamelled, the bottle shaped ewer with scrolled handle, domed cover and serpentine spout, the body decorated with high relief scenes in shaded enamel of a cat chasing butterflies amidst peonies, the goblets also decorated with conforming flowers, the ewer marked `Silver`, the tray also marked `NS1 Sterling`, gross weight 120oz., the tray 19 5/8in. (50cm.) long, the ewer 11¼in. (28.5cm.) high.

An Indian Mughal School gilt and lacquer papier-mâché mirror case 17th / 18th century, the removable cover finely painted with a spray of flowers on a gilt ground within floral and gilt borders, the reverse side with a rose bush in bloom on a blue ground, the base decorated with three cartouches depicting figures drinking wine, surrounded by gilt trees, plants and birds, 9 x 6¼in. (23 x 16cm.), ½in. (1.75cm.) deep, some losses to lacquer, damage to corners of cover.
