Emil Hoppe for E Bakalowits & Sohne, Vienna, a Secessionist wine glass, 1906, from service no. 130, multi faceted ogee bowl with intaglio border to the rim, on serpentine knopped stem and splayed 14 sided foot, manufactured by Meyr's Neff, 17.5cm high Note: Born in 1876 in Austria, Hoppe became an architect working under Otto Wagner, before establishing his own practice in 1909. During this time he designed textiles and postcards as well as a single wine service. The largest wine glass from an extensive service of drinking glasses, individual examples appear in museums and collections throughout the world including the British Museum, MAK Vienna and Neue Galerie New York. The chandelier manufacturer and crystal glass retailer E Bakalowits, located in Vienna, commissioned wine services and decorative glass designed by architects including Koloman Moser and Josef Hoffmann (of the Wiener Werkstatte) , supplying the Imperial court and Bohemian elite of Europe. (unsigned), 16pp. 4to., California, Feb. 13, 1980, to his biographer, Nuel Melton, who had once been jailed with and later befriended Manson. In part: '...the Supreme Court passed a law and said on paper this law will help Charles Manson. NO RESERVE Book of Hours.- Single leaf from a book of Hours, printed in Latin, on vellum, 26 lines with many 1-line initials and two 2-line initials, picked out in red and blue and heightened in gold, text set within elaborate woodcut border, with eight frames depicting scenes from the Last Supper, Judas Iscariot's betrayal, the Garden of Gethsemane and Judas' suicide, and panels with intricate foliage and mythical fauna, small amounts of staining along inner gutter (not affecting border) otherwise edges lightly browned, upper and lower edge laid down to mount with tape, mount browned, 177 x c.116mm., [?Paris], [?Gilles Hardouin], [?c.1520].⁂ The style of this leaf, with ornate woodcut border and colour decorations, closely recalls the work of the Hardouin brothers in Paris, whose printed books of Hours deliberately mimicked the beauty of illuminated manuscripts. The specific scenes depicted in the border (in order): Christ raising the chalice of wine at the Last Supper; Judas accepting the 30 pieces of silver from the Pharisees; Christ washing the disciple's feet; Christ praying in the Garden of Gethsemane while the disciples sleep; the arrival of the soldiers in the Garden; Judas identifying Christ with a kiss; Judas returning the silver; Judas hanging himself from a tree with devils beside him.

He lived from 1915 till 1941 in Hongkong and Shanghai , He was editor for both the Hong-Kong Telegraph and the South China Morning Post , in 1931 He settled in Shanghai as Editor for the Shanghai Times. He was also president of the Rotary Club Shanghai. From March 1940 he was Press Attaché at the British embassy in Shanghai

The porcelain is decorated with three reserves painted with birds and a portrait of a woman. An Edwardian silver baby's rattle and whistle, with mother o'pearl teether, Birmingham 1906, a Victorian silver baby's rattle and whistle, maker's mark CB over WS, lacks teether, an early Victorian silver wine label for Gin, by George Unite, Birmingham 1845, two Continental silver small boxes, a white metal filigree card case, a silver stamp box, a miniature pepper, and a silver finial in the form of two doves, approx. 12oz overall. (9)The stamp box is split along the back left and lower left edges. One rattle has a bell detatched, the other rattle has some damage to the bells, and is lacking the teether. The filigree card case is dented and split, other boxes have some small dents/knocks and scratches but overall ok.
