Slavery – Jamaica fine manuscript letter dated 1817 from the managers of the Three Mile River Estate in Jamaica to its owner John Graham of Gartur in Stirling Scotland detailing all the supplies required by the estate. A document of considerable interest providing an insight into the day to day requirements of operating a sugar estate in the West Indies in the years prior to the abolition of slavery. In particular the letter provides considerable information on the state of the slaves on this particular estate as the first section of requirements is headed ‘For Negroes’ – and from this list it seems that they were well looked after as the list contains clothing hats handkerchiefs food and even port wine.
