Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 6th century CE. An interestingly-shaped small transport amphora, without handles, of a local design rather than from a large mass manufacturer. It has a flat bottom, a slightly tapered body, and a rounded top with a tiny spout without a rim. This suggests that its contents were evaporative and needed to be protected - perhaps wine or some other alcohol? Size: 4.2" W x 13.1" H (10.7 cm x 33.3 cm)This amphora sank in a shipwreck, a common occurrence in the stormy Mediterranean, and lay underwater for centuries while sea life covered it; remains of shells and a sponge encrust its surface. This same sea life would have eaten away its cork and spilled its contents onto the sea floor, leaving the hard pottery behind for us to find. Provenance: Ex-Private San Francisco, CA collection Condition: Surface is almost fully encrusted with sea deposits; interior is full of deposits, giving it a heavy weight. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. We ship worldwide and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience. #120053
Magna Graecia, South Italy, Xenon, ca. 4th c. BCE. A fine ceramic drinking cup of a classic kylix form with a wide shallow bowl on a raised foot and twin upraised handles, the interior bowl adorned with a laurel wreath pattern encircling an elaborate star motif on the tondo, the same laurel leaf motif mirrored on the exterior walls - all via skillfully added peach-pink pigment on a lustrous black ground. A fabulous example of this ancient vessel probably used for drinking wine, perfect for all you oenophiles out there! Size: 8.5" W x 2.25" H (21.6 cm x 5.7 cm)Xenon ware is a specific type of Apulian pottery, named after a vase in Frankfurt (Beazley, EVP, p. 219,1.) that is inscribed with the name: XENON. Provenance: Ex- Collection of James Farmer, Maryland, collected from major galleries and auction houses between 1995 and 2005 Condition: Two pieces reattached to body. Expected surface wear with pigment loss commensurate with age. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
