It evolved from its early form-an oval base and a broad body that swelled at the center and tapered to a wide neck-into various body shapes, including cylindrical and four-sided ones. Wine glass with bell-shape bowl, cushion knop stem teared, slightly domed folded foot, 18.5cm.Condition report:Some fleabites to the rim. The bowl has evident light surface scratching to both surfaces. Some heavier scratches to the exterior. Some annealing lines and trapped air bubbles to the knops and foot. No significant chips or evidence of polishing or repair.
Wine glass heat distorted, labelled 'From St Pierre / Martinique W.I. / destroyed by eruption of Mont Pelee May 1902', 14cm.The 1902 volcanic eruption the island of Martinique was one of the deadliest in recent history. On 8th May a ground-hugging cloud of incandescent lava particles suspended by searing turbulent gases moved at hurricane speed down the southwest flank of the volcano, reaching Saint-Pierre, some 6 miles away, at 8:02 a.m. Once the pyroclastic surge reached the city escape was virtually impossible. Almost everyone within the city proper—about 28,000 people—died, burned or were buried by falling masonry. The hot ash ignited a firestorm, fueled by smashed buildings and casks of rum.

Tall wine glass, funnel bowl wheel-engraved with fruiting vines, multi-teared shoulder knop over a further plain swelled centre knop, conical foot, 21.5cm. Condition report:Good overall condition, no chips, cracks or evidence of polishing. Light surface wear and some production flaws, including a small inclusion to the centre of the plain knop.
