An early 20th Century French silver wine taster, of circular form with embossed part fluted and beaten shot decoration, circular ring handle and thumb rest, all to green velvet ribbon, diameter 7.5cm, stamped, together with two Edwardian circular pierced dishes with embossed foliate and C scroll borders, Birmingham 1902, total weight 2.7 (3).
A rare and important 24" boxwood Soho Slide Rule c 1800 by W & S JONES No 30 Holborn London (the original maker of the Soho) The rule has Soho scales on one side, sub-divided inches on both edges and on the reverse, gauge point tables of volume and weights of ale, wine, gold, mercury, air etc. also four plain scales of inches, halves, thirds and quarters and two lines of chords. A rule marked 25" to 47" under the slide and logarithmic scales marked S.T. and N. on the reverse of the slide. The only other example we could find of this 24" rule is in the James Watt collection in the British Museum which previously belonged to Robert Potter, an engineer in Soho (see article in Journal of Oughtred Soc. 1997 vol 6, No 2 and The Soho Rule by Jane Wess, Curator of Mathematics, The Science Museum, London) superb condition F
