Two rare English black wax twin dolls late 19th century, the reinforced black wax shoulder-heads turned slightly to the right with inset with glass eyes, one pair brown and one pair green, eyelid lines, down-turned mouths, black curly wool wigs, black glazed cotton stuffed bodies with stitched on solid black wax limbs, original white cotton and muslin dresses, lace trim with yellow silk sashes and bows at shoulders, underclothes, socks and cream satin socks -20in. (51cm.) high (one leg broken, but most appears to be there, slight wear and one sash perishing) - these dolls and the following 14 lots are the childhood toys of Christabel Browning (b.1897) and her sister Eileen Browning (b.1896); they are mainly pairs or twin dolls, so are being sold like this. The Brownings were a very wealthy family. Their father was Henry Gonne Browning, a partner in the family wine merchants (Twiss and Brownings (later Twiss, Brownings and Hallowes). They had various sole import licenses into England for prestigious brands including Hennessy Cognac and Dry Monopole Champagne. The family lived at 70 Knightsbridge and later 5 Cadogan Square. Their cousin was Freddie Boy (Frederick) Browning who was married to Daphne Du Maurier and another cousin was Maud Gonne the Irish freedom fighter and muse to WB Yeats. Christabel married the vendor’s grandfather Robert Arthur Redhead in 1926. He was managing Director of Associated Newspapers and his cousin, Peggy Redhead, was married to Esmond Harmsworth, the second Viscount Rothermere.
