A manuscript book of remedies, cures, medicines etc circa 1836-1896, 100+ pages of manuscript entries including accounts entries, some receipts/remedies etc, "Cure for Head-ache, take of spirits of wine one ounce, camphor four drachms, volatile spirit of camphor four drachms, mix and apply to the head, with the hand frequently", "A very nice salve for healing sores & wounds. 2oz of Burgundy pitch. 1oz of good beeswax. 1oz of lard put them in a jar, melt them in an oven, stir them now and then with a stick of lead. Recipe given to us by Mrs Barton August 24th 1876", "1838 1 Jan. Case of Scurvy in the hands [?] 20 years...2nd Jan. Blotches in the face. Mr Joseph[?] Hawley embrocation pills & drink...4th Jan. Scrofula very bad...a boy named Morstyn [?] aged 12 years - brought by his mother... flesh eaten round his neck, shoulder and mouth and left eye - very thin...St Thomas's Hospital six months but got worse - dsimissed July 1836 pronounced incureable. Washed the parts with ---[?] and annointed them with...." etc etc, similar remarks on treatments/medicines for patients with King's Evil, wound on thigh, "woman from Limehouse for husband Rheumatism gave her box of pills" "Tuesday...Woman from workhouse...gave Embn. for piles" "Mrs Riches - lump between the breasts...", plus other receipts including cure for ringworm; mixture for worms; for the Rheumatism; for Hooping Cough; "The way to make Queen Anne's Salve", cure for toothache, " for the relief of bronchial tubes. Jan. 9 1865. Roast a turkey [?] open and put in as much Brimstone as will lay upon a fourpenny piece, and eat it in bed. repeat it a few nights till well. This recipe from an old gent in the railway carriage"; for dislocations and broken bones before setting; for dropsy etc etc, some accounts entries also for clothing, some domestic receipts etc, the m/s book possibly relating/originating from London, mentions of Covent Garden, King's Road, Chelsea, Limehouse, old vellum (worn), printed copper engraved label to front pastedown "Hay, Printer, Stationer & Bookbinder, No. 114 Long Lane, Borough"

Scarce; together with Louis Pasteur: 'Studies on Fermentation: The Diseases of Beer - Their Causes, and the Means of Preventing Them', London, Macmillan, 1879, 1st UK edition, 12 engraved plates as called for, original cloth gilt. Pasteur discovered that the "diseases" of beer were caused by micro-organisms found in the air and not spontaneously generated as had been previously believed. To eliminate this contamination he proposed a reformed brewing process. This also made possible the scientific processing of wine, milk, and other perishable products (2)

Some expected wear including wear and small losses to silver inlay, expected wear to surface and patina consistent with age.

A Chinese bronze archaic tripod ritual wine vessel, jueShang dynastyCast with whorl-capped posts, prominent spout and flaring tripod legs, the mid section with taotie in shallow-relief over a leiwen ground, the traces of two characters under the single animal-mask handle, the surface patinated to a dark greenish hue strewn with verdigris, 21.5cm high.商 銅饕餮紋爵Bronze vessels like the present lot were used by the Shang Kings, and later by those of the Zhou Dynasty, to prepare and consume wine in ceremonies that would link the kings to the spirits of their ancestors, and symbolise both their power and legitimacy to rule with the mandate of Heaven. Emblematic of the outstanding mastery of metallurgy in ancient China, and of the ability of Shang Dynasty craftsmen to marry functionality with elaborate decoration, the silhouette of the jue became a symbol of status when interred in the tombs of nobility. The cultural relevance and status of the jue remained such that even when its ritualistic used ceased, the shape was used for millenia until the Qing Dynasty in various mediums, from copper alloys, lacquer, cloisonné-enamel, rhinoceros horn, to porcelain.Condition Report: 品相報告Expected surface encrustations and wear consistent with age. Nibbling to edges, particularly tip of one foot. One leg broken off but extant.
