Attributed to Jan Havicksz Steen (Leiden, Netherlands, circa 1626 - 1679) "Tavern Interior".Oil on panel. Signed.60 x 99 cm.Jan Steen was a Dutch painter of great versatility, famous for his costumbrista and of genre scenes. He was trained by several masters from different cities, such as Adriaen van Ostade from Haarlem, the landscape painter Jan van Goyen from The Hague and Nicolaus Knüpfer from Ultrecht. We read in his biography in the Rijksmuseum that "in 1648, already a master, he helped to create an artists' guild in Leiden, in which he held various positions," including that of president on two occasions. His style, characterized by a grotesque and lively look, evolves during his career towards works with fewer but more characteristic figures until "in his last period he stylized his figures, toned down the colors and his compositions opened up to the new tastes of the turn of the century," as stated by the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza. In addition to the representation of cheerful and amusing interior and exterior scenes, the Thyssen continues, "his paintings with allegorical and religious themes stand out, along with some commissioned portraits", as well as some with historical themes. It is curious to note the appreciation of the Mauritshuis, which states that "his chaotic scenes are so typical of his work that in Dutch there is the common expression «a house of Jan Steen»".Steen developed an extensive production that today we find preserved and exhibited in many Western museums. As we cannot mention it all, we highlight "Young Man Eating Oysters" (c. 1658-60), the master's smallest work, in the Mauritshuis in The Hague; "Wine is Mocking" (1663-64), in the Norton Simon Museum in California; the "Self-Portrait with Lute" (c. 1663-65), in the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza; and "The Feast of St. Nicholas" (c. 1665-68), in the Rijksmuseum.Reference bibliography:- Thyssen Museum (n.d.). This pure, medium bodied wine possesses moderately high tannin, superb complexity and concentration, good sweetness and low acidity. 6 bottles of Chateau Cheval Blanc Premier Grand Cru Classe St Emilion 6 bottles in OWC Chateau Cheval Blanc Premier Grand Cru Classe St Emilion 2004 (purchased ‘en primeur and single cellared in perfect conditions since).Robert Parker – 92The 2004 Cheval Blanc has always been a wine that I felt needed patience on behalf of the wine lover, and so it is proving to be the case. Served blind I remarked upon a surprisingly Burgundy-like bouquet with ample red cherries, candied strawberry and redcurrant scents, the Merlot clearly more conspicuous than the Cabernet Franc, at least for now. The palate is medium-bodied with just a touch of coarseness on the entry. I appreciate the weight and balance here and belatedly the Cabernet Franc begins to express itself on the latter half, lending structure and grip, a dash of spice and a bit of sinew. It remains a very fine Cheval Blanc from Pierre Lurton and his team : Robert Parker 92 points Qty: 6 Wilson55 can help with delivery! Click on the shipping tab for more details.
