An 18th century oil painting on canvas by Hugh Barron - portrait of a gentleman, three quarter length wearing a dark green jacket and waistcoat and white cravat, standing in a pastoral landscape setting, signed bottom right H Barron and inscribed Pinxt and dated 1771 and further signed and inscribed below first signature, with old typed label verso - Henry Thompson of Leith Hill died 26th January 1796, (he purchased the Leith Hill estate, Surrey in 1772) and with further details relating to the estate and also with small label inscribed in ink Meysey Thompson, 126 x 101 cm approx in wide moulded gilt frame, with plaque to frame reading Mr Thompson of Leith Hill PLEASE NOTE: The inscription states the identity of the sitter as Henry Thompson, but it is possible that this is inaccurate as the portrait shows a young man and Henry Thompson would have been around 50 in 1771. It is possible that the portrait shows one of his sons, Richard or Stephen, as both were working for the family wine business in Portugal in the 1770s and Hugh Barron was also in Lisbon in 1770/71. One of the brothers may have sat for him there and the typically English pastoral setting added later. Stephen would have come of age in 1771 and Henry Thompson purchased his Leith Hill estate the following year, so the portrait may have been commissioned to commemorate both events.
