Early 18th century Liège silver dish of oval form, with flared rim and engraved IHS Christogram, together with a Liège silver wine cruet, with similar engraving and hinged cover, on a pedestal foot and one other similar, without gilding. Dish underside comprehensively marked, including wriggle line, Eagle 1724, maker's mark crowned MB, probably Matthias Bruis, letter G and Liège mark. Silver gilt cruet with similar marks but worn, silver cruet maker's mark MB only.Provenance: To be sold by direction of the Canonesses of the Holy Sepulchre. The present lot is possibly that described in the benefactors book as. 'The Revd mother Mary of the Conception Pryoress hath given a silver bassen and two crewets for the price of 127 1/2 fl waying 33 ounces and a half and somewhat more'Silver dish - General overall condition good, some surface scratching and wear, rim is slightly distorted, inner edge of base has been dented and repaired. Marks rubbed but legible.Silver gilt wine cruet - General overall condition good, some surface scratching, gilding worn, cover slightly distorted and poor fit. Marks worn.Silver cruet - General overall condition very good, some surface scratching, may have had spout cover removed. Maker's mark only.
Edwardian silver copy of an ancient Greek Mycenaean wine cup, based on an original found during the archaeological excavation of Mycenae in 1876, with leaf decorated scroll handle and a chased and engraved frieze depicting Mycenaean faces in profile, between upper and lower bands of leafwork, raised on a circular foot.
