An oni has climbed on his back and is offering him a pipe, while a second oni sits by Enmao’s side pointing towards the other oni. The barrel is inscribed ODEWARA MEISAN (special produce of Odawara) within a greenstained ivory cartouche and Enma-o’s hat is inscribed O (king). The barrel and cover are carved from wood while the plum wine inside the barrel is ivory. Signed BANSUI within a red-lacquered reserve on the underside.HEIGHT 8.3 cmCondition: Excellent condition with only few minor traces of wear. Fine honey and amber patina.Provenance: British collection.
