Always a Q-car, the 5-Series Touring here is the desirable M-Sport twin-scroll turbo model; low mileage and low owners, a hugely capable allrounder. The car that did more than any other to make the idea of a performance diesel acceptable: the BMW 535d.  Indeed, it was the first ever diesel car to be welcomed onto the Top Gear test track! The fifth-generation of BMW’s 5-Series (E60 as a saloon or E61 as an estate or ‘Touring’) was produced from 2003 to 2010 and is ageing like fine wine. Even though Chris Bangles’ design was at first widely critiqued, the E60/E61 was well accepted and still looks good for its age.The E60 generation introduced various electronic features to the 5-Series, including iDrive, head-up display, active cruise control, active steering and voice control. The E60 also was the first 5-Series available with a turbocharged petrol engine, a 6-speed automatic transmission and regenerative braking. New safety features (some as options) for the E60 included adaptive headlights, night vision, active headrests, Lane Departure Warning, and high intensity emergency brake lights. In 2007, there came a model face-lift and the introduction BMW’s fuel-saving Efficient Dynamics programme (that means regenerative braking, a gearshift indicator and active aerodynamics – meaning flaps over the air intakes don’t open when the engine is cold).Today, the 535d has something of a reputation - with its twin-turbo version of the 3.0-litre M57 straight-six engine, allied to a 6-speed SMG-ll gearbox, there is 282bhp and 428lb ft of torque to enjoy. Impressive figures even by today’s standards. The car presented here is a 2010 BMW (E61) 535d Touring M Sport which has an enviable service history to back up its modest 66,227 miles in the hands of just two previous owners. Our vendor has recently entrusted the car to the very capable Darragh Doyle, an ex-F1 Mechanic, and BMW guru of ‘Everything M3s’ in Banbury. In August 2022, some £12,000 was spent to ensure this Touring is now in the best possible health. This work included a full engine, gearbox, and differential service (the latter with the fitment of a Wavetrac ATB spool), a custom remap, swirl flap and EGR cooler delete kits, a new water pump and thermostat, new turbo vacuum lines, new Bosch glow plugs, new belts/filters/fluids, a new crankshaft damper pulley, rear suspension air bags replacement and new BMW front brake pads. With a complete service history from new, low ownership and a great specification, this highly capable ground-breaking estate, is the epitome of a Q-car – a discrete appearance, with go anywhere, do anything abilities, allied to a turn of pace and power to rival much more obvious machinery – all at a very tempting guide price.(Please note that the registration 'T88 CCL' will not come with the car, it will revert back to 'YE59 VFD'.)SpecificationMake: BMWModel: 535DYear: 2010Chassis Number: WBAPX92030CR25802Registration Number: YE59 VFDTransmission: Automatic Engine Number: 25617319 Drive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 66145 MilesMake: RHDClick here for more details and images

Lot 601

Elegant, 2.6-litre, four-seat, early-1960S Coupé clearly personifying Giorgetto Giugiaro's emerging talent.Alfa Romeo’s 2000/2600 family of saloons, spiders and coupés have never quite captured the imagination in the way the smaller 101 and 105-Series Giulias and Giuliettas have done but are now finally being recognised as serious classics in their own right. The 2000 replaced the 1900-Series as Alfa Romeo’s flagship model in 1958 and utilised a 2-litre, four-cylinder engine coupled with a 5-speed gearbox on a longer wheelbase platform for additional legroom. The Berlina was joined at the outset by a lovely Spider version, styled by Carrozzeria Touring, which acquired a set of twin carburettors to boost power to 115bhp. In 1960, the range was further expanded to include an elegant 2+2 Coupé styled by the talented Giorgetto Giugiaro, then employed as Chief Designer by Bertone. The Sprint, as the coupé version was known, managed to convey a refined, sporting air that still looks fabulous nearly six decades on. Answering criticism that the 2000 lacked power, Alfa’s engineers developed a new six-cylinder engine, a reworking of the big four, and the over-square motor had a total capacity of 2,584cc with twin overhead camshafts, a raised compression of 9:1 and triple carburettors. With a healthy 145bhp available, the new power unit was capable of propelling the 2600 Sprint to a top speed of 125mph (200 km/h). The styling of the Sprint was little-altered, only the air scoop on the bonnet and ‘2600’ badging setting it apart from the four-cylinder version. Although built in comparatively small numbers, the 2600 Sprint was actually the most successful of the 2000/2600 family, with 6,999 finding homes worldwide and it has become historically significant as the last Alfa Romeo to have been fitted with an inline, six-cylinder engine topped with twin overhead camshafts, the traditional Alfa Romeo engine configuration since the 1920s.Manufactured on 21st May 1963, this is a superb example of these rare Alfas and is finished in an attractive shade of Cobalt Blue with burgundy leather seating, complementing wine-red interior trim and sky blue carpets. It was delivered new to South Africa in left-hand drive before eventually arriving in the UK in 2014. The subject of an earlier, photo-documented restoration, this particular Alfa has clearly passed through caring hands and remains in excellent, corrosion-free condition throughout. It has recently been serviced including a brake overhaul and will be offered with a fresh MOT issued prior to our sale. Your early inspection is welcomed and encouraged to appreciate this eminently useable, four-seat classic. The 2600 Sprint is a wonderful 1960s Italian GT and represents superb value when compared with contemporary exotics from Maserati and Ferrari.SpecificationMake: ALFA ROMEOModel: 2600Year: 1963Chassis Number: AR822146Registration Number: LDS 522ATransmission: ManualDrive Side: Left-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 57474 MilesMake: LHDInterior Colour: Red HideClick here for more details and images
