A fascinating and charming rare believed 18th century (mid-1700's) handwritten recipe book. Believed to be from the grandmother of a Mrs Alfred Essex of 53 Oakley Square, London. The vellum bound manuscript features hundreds of handwritten recipes, cures and related. To include; ' Cold Cream ,' 'To make Raspberry Jam,' 'To make the pickle', 'To make Orange Wine,' 'For a Consumption,' 'a recipe for a cough,' ' To make Daffeys Elixer,' 'For the Rheumation ,' 'a salve for a green wound,' 'To Preserve Damson's for pies,' and many other types of recipe. The manuscript, totalling some 269 handwritten pages makes for some fascinating reading. Many of the entries are followed by the name particular lady who gave her the recipe. Of particular interest is a recipe titled 'To make Custard - Mrs Bird's Way ,' which appears to have caused some fascination with a previous owner who had articles published attempting to work out if the was THE 'Mrs Bird' of Birds Custard (but it is not believed the two are related). Some paperwork relating to this is included within the lot. Included with 18th century book is a similar, but smaller, 19th century recipe / note book compiled by Mrs Alfred Essex of 53 Oakley Square, London. To the front pages of book are laid in three cabinet photographs of Mrs Essex, and, in her hand is written her address and the year '1863.' The book, lovingly, made, comes with a handwritten contents section to the start and features recipes for: 'Blancmange ,' 'Apple Jelly,' 'Milk Cake Pudding,' 'to pickle tomatoes' 'Mincemeat,' etc. The rear of the book has been used by a later hand (some pages dated 1918), likely by another family member, to add in some more recipes. This recipe book is accompanied by a period photograph folio containing the cabinet photographs of Alfred & Mrs Alfred Essex. A rare and unique set of documents, all relating to the same family. Note: from the large Fisher / Blomfield family archive consigned to this sale. The collection comprises of items from Francis ' FMB ' Marion Bates Fisher (a famous Edwardian Tennis Player ) and features items from the lives of his entire family (most notably that of his eldest daughter Esther Fisher who went on to become an international pianist, his other daughter was Lady Esther Frances Barron and his youngest daughter Alice Blomfield (nee Fisher) whose husband - Siegfried Blomfield - was a noted soldier during WWII and whose daughter (Juliet Blomfield) went on to become a ballet dancer). The family owned many properties both in the UK and New Zealand, and were extremely well travelled. Their friends and acquaintances were some of the most notable characters of our time - Ernest Shackleton , Winston Churchill , Maxine Elliott , Henry Wadsworth Longfellow , John Singer Sargent but to name a few.
