The first meaning “Ben”- a book and the second “Mi”- a river in Hunan Province. As when reading Chinese or Japanese characters there can be many interpretations which may be multiplied by inscrutable calligraphy and the lack of skill of the reader.Hair crack to the rim, one small abrasions to the rim, light enamel wear

Attributed to Giacomo Raffaelli (Italian, 1753-1836): A fine circular micromosaic plaque depicting an allegory of Aphrodite and DionysusRoman, late 18th / early 19th centuryinlaid with polychrome tesserae to depict a swan, representing Aphrodite, sipping wine from a kylix against which a thyrsus rests, before a bed of hot coals as the attributes of Dionysus, God of wine, theatre, pleasure and excess, against a blue ground within a polychrome tesserae border, the plaque probably originally set into the lid of a snuff box, 7.1cm diameter Footnotes:Giacomo Rafaelli was trained as a painter and sculptor from an early age, becoming a master in Florentine hardstone mosaics and Roman micromosaics. His family had supplied the Vatican Mosaic Workshop with smalti, the material used for micromosaics. In 1775 he gave the first exhibition which led to a brilliant career in which he produced a vast number and variety of works, ranging from mosaic floors, tables, and monumental clocks to miniature mosaics small enough to fit on a snuffbox or brooch. One of his earliest known examples is a small round plaque, signed and dated 1779, depicting 'The Doves of Pliny' (now at the British Museum). For a related plaque depicting an allegory of the temple of love also attributed to Rafaelli, see lot 23 in this catalogue. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
A very fine third quarter of the 19th century, dated, Black Forest brass-inlaid walnut automata clock depicting a drinker on a barrel with four automata functionsRetailed by Camerer Kuss & Co, 522, Oxford Street, W.C., LONDON. The barrel dated 1865.Surmounted by the finely carved figure of a man sitting on a barrel wearing a red cap and star-studded cloak with gold trim, his muscles depicted through the blue tunic which has a wide fancy collar and decorated border, over yellow coloured striped and decorated tights to slip-on mules, his face is naturalistically painted with coiffured hair and a neatly trimmed beard and moustache, with articulated jaw and moving glass eyes, in his left arm he holds a bottle, in his right he holds a goblet, the barrel below him is dated 1865 and realistically rendered with planks, collar and tap, supported on a decorated waisted stand, over the main body of the clock set with a 5 inch signed painted Roman dial with minute track and matching quatrefoil hands, on an ogee-moulded base with brass inlay and shaped apron, a door to the left hand side carries an old label '508'. The spring driven movement with two barrels - one to drive the going train, the other to drive the automata actions on demand by the pulling of a cord to the right hand side of the case. Ticking and fully operational. 51cms (20ins) high.Footnotes:Camerer & Co. was established in 1788 by two German clock repairers. Owned and run by various family members over the following 211 years, the company first specialised in importing Black Forest clocks, later expanding their stock to include French and English clocks, as well as English and Swiss watches. In 1852, the firm's name was changed to Camerer Kuss & Co. when a cousin, David Kuss, joined the firm. They won an award in the 1862 Great Exhibition, and others followed; from 1876 to 1901 they advertised that they included Queen Victoria among their clients. This clock carries an automaton commonly called a 'drinker', trinker. This configuration of the subject sitting/standing on or near a barrel who pours some libations into the glass held in his other hand and then imbibing, has been immortalised as far back as the late 1500's in Augsburg. Interestingly, the earliest 'drinker' was a depiction of Bacchus/Dionysus, the Roman/Greek god of wine. However, by the 19th century, the figure has become Gambrinus, king of beer and brewing in Christian European folklore. This version, sitting with leg crossed is one of the rarest. An early 18th century Austrian silver telleruhr timepiece with engraved dragon handJohann Franz Treibler, InnsbruckThe shaped plate surmounted by a large brass suspension ring, the delicate repousse silver mask depicting a bust of a woman surrounded by foliate C-scrolls and swags, with a large rose to each side, screwed to a thicker metal plate supporting the movement's shaped dust cover to the rear. The engraved gilt brass Roman and Arabic chapter ring with floral cruciform half-hour markers, the engraved dragon minute hand with an elaborate knotted hour hand. The spring driven verge movement with four knopped and ringed pillars and a front swinging pendulum with stone set bob, the back plate engraved with a wave border and an elaborate cartouche at the top signed Io Franz Treibler, a similar cartouche at the bottom inscribed Insprvgg. 33.5cms (13ins) wide Footnotes:At least two other telleruhr's are known by Johann Franz Treibler; one is a striking clock and it's mask depicts a much older woman. It is possible the masks were a series representing the seasons; it was fairly common to personify the seasons and tie them to human stages of life; Spring being represented as a fair youth; summer as harvesters in field, autumn as wine makers or imbibers, and Winter as an elder. Another similar telleruhr is held by the Tiroler Landesmuseum in Austria. It is ascribed to Johann Franz Treibler who worked in Innsbruck around 1710/1720.The back of the dial bears practise engraving; 'JO', possibly an 'R' and a '20'. It is likely that the 'JO' refers to the maker, while 20 could be a personal serial number or the date 1720.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

America, Colony of Virginia.- Certaine directions for the sending of Men, Comodities, & Cattle to Virginia, manuscript in Secretary hand, 10pp., a few small stains in margins, edges chipped, disbound, folio, [? c. 1609].⁂ Advice to prospective "passengers" and colonists to Virginia. The manuscript details previous experiences, such as when to arrive ("beginninge of July"), types of farmers, ("should be lustie"), what to do on their first arrival ("let them take good care of lying on the ground"), and what sort of amounts of commodities for trading ("be 1200 l"), provisions and allowances of food "bisket bread").Subheadings comprise: (1). Trading: "ffor Comodities that are fittest to be carried to Virginia, and these most ysefull and vendible..."; (2). Provisions. "A note of the quantitie of such provisions as are to be laden aboard any Ship that goes for Virginia to carry the proporcon of 500 Passingers. The time they must lay their victuall in for must be 3 moneths or 90 daies". (3). The allowances that is daily made... this rate to a Messe, foure Men being accounted a Messe... ." Of the advice in this manuscript for colonising Virginia, the 1609 expedition seems to be the most apposite. The writer has drawn on previous expeditions and is aware of the qualities prospective colonists will need, what sort of vendible stock to take for trade (rugs, blankets, wine etc.), and food ("Oates"), in particular cattle ("They are of great prize in Virginia").The colonisation of Virginia by the Virginia Company is a history of repeated setbacks and failure. Most colonists were unsuited to farming, and other factors such as adverse weather conditions and poor relations with the First Nations people resulted in extremely high mortality rates. The colonies main hope of survival were the supply ships and this manuscript probably relates to the Third Supply which led to shipwreck of the Sea Venture at Bermuda with the loss of essential supplies for the colony. This led to the "Starving Time" in the winter of 1609-1610, the abandonment of the settlement at Jamestown and its re-establishment by a Fourth Supply mission in 1610.
