FREDERIK DE MOUCHERON (Emden, 1633- Amsterdam, 1686)."Romantic landscape.Oil on canvas.Signed in the lower left corner.Size: 82 x 65 cm; 109 x 94 cm (frame).Frederik de Moucheron was a Dutch landscape painter and draughtsman of the Golden Age. He produced mainly landscapes which were decorated with human and animal figures by various colleagues.Frederik de Moucheron was the son of the painter Balthazar de Moucheron and Cornelia van Brouckhoven. His father came from a wealthy family of merchants and wine merchants. He is portrayed as one of the younger sons in the family portrait of Pierre de Moucheron (1583). Frederik trained with Jan Asselijn and became a landscape painter. At the age of 22 he left for Paris, where he spent three years and toured Lyon, Italy and Greece. In 1659 he settled in Amsterdam where he married, continued his artistic production and died.He painted French, Italian and Dutch landscapes. To complete these scenes he was joined by contemporaries who specialised in figure painting, such as Adriaen van de Velde in Amsterdam, Theodor Helmbreker in Paris, and occasionally Johannes Lingelbach, and Nicolaes Pieterszoon Berchem.De Moucheron's son Isaac, named after his grandfather, who was a pupil of Rembrandt, became a popular engraver and painter, and many of his landscape wall decorations survive in Amsterdam.
