A good Chinese rock crystal wine ewer, formed as a phoenix, the spout forming the head, the body carved with wings and feet, and with flowers and leaves surrounding the cover, the knop carved as a pomegranate and finger citron, 18th/19th century, 15.8cm. (2) Provenance: Sackville, 5th Earl of Yarborough, purchased from John Sparks Ltd., for 79 guineas, and recorded in the Sparks archive. Cf. Christie`s, New York, 20 October 2004, lot 581, for a similar example from the collection of C. Ruxton and Audrey B. Love.
A rare Chinese wine warmer and cover, made in sections to emulate a double gourd, the upper half with a small spout and handle and with a cylindrical base decorated in iron red with five bats, the body decorated with gilt roundels and leaf scrolls on a blue ground, 18th century, some damages and repair, 19.7cm. (3)
A Korean celadon wine cup, the fluted sides inlaid in slip with flower heads, the associated stand incised with further floral sprigs, Koryo, 12th century, the bowl extensively restored, the stand with a small rim chip, 14.5cm. (2) Provenance: collection of Professor R C Cookson, (1922-2008).
A pair of white metal mounted elephant tusk wine coolers, early 20th Century, each ivory body applied with a white metal rim flanked by a pair of elephant mask and ring handles, one with rim inscribed `Presented to Major WM. Forrest, D.S.O. 3rd Welsh Regt. with an illuminated address by the inhabitants of Prieska, Cape Colony in appreciation of his valuable services as Commandant of the District, Sept. 1900 - Nov. 1901`, the tusk incised initials `T.J`, each supported by three downswept tusks united by a ring stretcher, the white metal mounts marked with two stars, height approx 59.5cm.
A double series opaque twist stem wine glass, circa 1770, the ogee bowl above a plain stem with a multi-ply spiral band outside a pair of spiral tapes on a conical foot (small chip to foot), together with three double series opaque twist stem glasses, the bowls engraved with birds amidst fruiting vine.
