An olive-green tint straight-sided sealed and dated 'onion' wine bottle, the seal stamped E HERBERT 1721, with string rim, 19cm high; and a similar olive-green tint wine bottle ensuite with an armorial seal of three lions rampant, the arms of HERBERT, 19cm high (cracked and glued) See 20th February 2008, lot 557 for a similar but cracked bottle sold in these rooms and Roger Dumbrell, Antique Wine Bottles, (1992) p.71, fig. 84, where he opines 'E. Herbert/1721', possibly Edmund Herbert, keeper of the Royal Forest at Whittlebury, Northants. The author suggests that five or six of these bottles are known to exist. Note: The Herbert family are and were particularly prominent in Wales, the extinct earldoms of POWIS and MONTGOMERY both belonging to this family and extant today the Earls of PEMBROKE (Wilton Place) and CARNARVON (Highclere Castle). It would be impossible to be specific as these are and were used in the lower strata of society (see above).
