John Russell of Falkirk; A George III mahogany-cased 8-day longcase clock, the one-piece silvered broken arch Roman & Arabic dial with a moon phase dial with painted detail, the hood with swan neck pediment and fluted pilasters, the case with blind fret detail above arched trunk the plinth with a moulded foot. 36 cm dial, 54 cm wide x 26 cm deep x 228 cm overall height.John Russell was the most famous of Falkirk's clockmakers. He was born in 1745 in Denny or Dennyloanhead and was originally a blacksmith or Wright. By 1770 he had become a clockmaker in Falkirk. IN 1780 he was elected as a Stentmaster to represent the town's watch and clockmakers. Russell made longcase clocks, musical clocks, watches, thermometers, and barometers and also installed the Town clock in the Steeple. The clock would have been functioning and is equipped with gut lines, the bell staff is broken and the bell has been fractured but glued back together.the dial is good and bright but shows a crack, see images.This was from the home of a local clock restorer who sadly diedi can not guarantee the clock being in working order but can not see why it wouldnt be but it will obviously need work to re-seat/replace the bell and bell staff.Update: Inhave now set up the clock and it runs without any problems, obviously this is no guarantee of reliability of accuracy.I will updat later.
