A ten-shilling note signed by Squadron Leader John Dering Nettleton VC and twenty other Bomber Command pilots, [at the Harrington Club, Kensington, early 1943], other signatures include Wing Commander C.K. Asherwold DFC, Squadron Leader `Laddie` Lucas DFC, Wing Commander John Creighton(?) DSO, DFC, Flight Lieutenant R. Marshall DFC, Squadron Leader R.C. Dutton DFC, Flight Lieutenant Thomas Parnaby DFC, Air Commodore P. Dickinson (blind), J.E. Scott DFC, Diepp and B.S.(?) Robinson DSO, DFC, the signatures in various blue inks and inscribed to both sides of the note, 8 x 14cm. Provenance: This group of autographs was collected for the vendor John Porter at the Harrington Club, Gloucester Road, Kensington, where John who aged 13 was the youngest there present, was taken by his parents for a tombola in aid of RAF flying crew in early 1943. John Dering Nettleton VC (1917-1943), the only VC noted among the autographees, received his award for his part in a daring Lancaster bomber attack on a factory near Augsburg, Germany, on 17 April 1942. He was killed in action near Turin, Italy, on the 13th July 1943, just months after signing this banknote. (1)
