GOLDEN GLOBE AWARD: An original oblong folio Certificate of Nomination for Award issued by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for the film The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas for a Golden Globe Award of Merit for Outstanding Achievement, Best Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical, 1982. The attractive certificate is printed in black with manuscript calligraphic insertions and features an image of a Golden Globe in the background. Individually signed by both the President and Secretary of the Association at the foot in black inks over a blind embossed seal. Matted in beige cloth and framed and glazed in a black and gold coloured frame to an overall size of 14 x 11.5. VG. £200-300 The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1982) is an American musical comedy film starring Burt Reynolds and Dolly Parton. It was the highest grossing live action musical film of the 1980s. As well as the present Golden Globe nomination, Dolly Parton was also nominated for a Best Actress Golden Globe.

Vintage signed colour 10.5 x 13.5 photograph, the image depicting the Pope kneeling in a half length profile pose, praying, and with his rosary beads in his hands. Signed (`Joannes XXIII PP´) in dark fountain pen ink to the lower photographer´s mount and dated 29th November (year indecipherable) in his hand. With a blind embossed seal alongside the signature. A small, minor water stain very slightly affects the paraph and part of the date. As is typical with colour photographs of this period, the image is slightly faded. A few very light, extremely minor creases to the photographer´s mount, VG £300-400

MESMER FRANZ: (1734-1815) German Physician and Astronomer. He theorised on animal magnetism, technique later named hypnosis, today´s meaning of Mesmerism. Rare A.L.S., Mesmer, one page, 4to, Versailles, 29th June 1802, to citizen Aubry, in French. Mesmer refers to his new living city, Versailles, and asks his correspondent about his health and about his plans for next summer, stating `If you still intend to go ahead with your plan of going to Eaux de Bains, and if it is convenient to you to do so via Versailles, I could accompany you: I would like to make a trip to Alsace while you are at the Bains to look for a small property which I may acquire.´, further requesting a prompt response from Aubry. With the adressee´s name to the verso in Mesmer´s hand, and a blind embossed stamp to the left heading bearing "Bibliotheque Occulte du Cte d´Ourches". Left edge irregularly trimmed and paper loss to the upper edge, not affecting the text or signature. G. £1500-2000 Aubry was a Doctor in Medicine, pupil and friend of Mesmer who practised magnetism with him. Provenance: from the collection of Count of Ourches (1787-1867) Eminent Esoterist who spent most of his fortune in magnetic experiments and putting together a very large private library with thousands of occultism volumes.

HEYMANS CORNEILLE: (1892-1968) Flemish Physiologist. Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine, 1938. A.L.S., C Heymans, one page, 4to, Gand, 18th November 1964, in German, French and English. On the printed stationery of "J.F & Heymans Farmakologish & Terapeutisch Instituut" Heymans reproduces three science thoughts, by Goethe, Bernard and Hopkins in their own languages. Heymans proclaims `The History of Science is the Science itself (Goethe)´, further with `Experimentation must question, escape from ideas, and always keep its spiritual freedom (Claude Bernard)´, and ends with `All dogmatic teaching about any aspect of the phenomenon of life is apt to be checked by the ultimate discovery that the living cell is before all things a heretic (Frederick Gowland Hopkins).´ Heymans adds underneath his signature `Prix Nobel 1938`, in his hand. Claude Bernard (1813-1878) French Physiologist, first to suggest the use of blind experiments to ensure the objectivity of scientific observations. Frederick Gowland Hopkins (1861-1947) English Biochemist, awarded Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1929 for the discovery of vitamins.

BAUDELAIRE CHARLES: (1821-1868) French Poet, a pioneering translator of Edgar Allan Poe. A.N.S., Charles Baudelaire, one page, oblong 8vo, Paris, 1st of March, [1843], in French. The document is a bill of exchange hand written by Baudelaire, getting obliged to pay `On March 1st next, I will pay to Monsieur Cousinet, or to his order the amount of one hundred and ninety francs, value received in goods´. Baudelaire adds underneath his signature, his own address `17 quai d´Anjou´ in his hand, where he lived between 1843 and 1846. Two stamps validating the document, one blind embossed, to the front. To the verso Cousinet transfers his credit, in Paris, 24th February 1844, "value in goods" to Mr. Dehaynin father & son, signing their acceptance as well as a witness signature. Irregularly trimmed, with some light overall age wear and with few pin holes, one close to the signature although not affecting it. G. £1500-2000 Baudelaire started writing in 1843 "Les Fleurs de Mal". He was only twenty one when he acknowledged this debt, and this would become an ongoing situation for the rest of his life. Louis Cousinet was a Restaurateur at the Tour d´Argent in Paris. Baudelaire used to eat at his restaurant, often with friends and without money to pay his bills. Mr Dehaynin was involved in coal business, supplying lighting and heating in Paris and even in banking.

D.S., Yo El Rey, one page, 4to, Valladolid, 26th July 1603, to Hernando Ganoguera, Lieutenant and Captain General of the Kingdom of Mallorca, in Spanish. The King explains that he has received a letter from Catalina Santandreu who explains her situation of not being able to find and pay a solicitor who could defend her rights against a powerful citizen of the Kingdom. Further instructing his correspondent to look for a solicitor who would defend her, and pay for his services, stating `Because it would not be fair that because she cannot get a solicitor she had to suffer, and not get justice´. Signed by the King at the foot. With a blind embossed paper seal affixed to the verso. Some light, minor age wear, and with a couple of minor worm holes, only very slightly affecting few words of the text, but not the signature, G. £150-200

The King approves the conviction of Gabriel Serra, sending him to the prison of Oran in Africa, for ten years. MARIANA OF AUSTRIA: (1634-1696) Queen Consort of Spain 1649-65, second wife of King Philip IV. A fine L.S., Yo la Reyna, as Queen, one page, oblong folio, Madrid, 8th April 1660, to Cardinal [Fabio] Chigi ('Much respected father Cardinal, my dearest and much loved friend'), in Spanish. The attractively penned manuscript letter states, in part, 'The contentment you express in your letter of 18th February about the treaty of marriage of my daughter, the Infanta Dona Maria Teresa, and the establishment of Peace with that Crown, is due to the will of the King, my husband, and I rely on Your Person to seek to support this on every occasion that you are in a position to.' With integral address leaf bearing a good blind embossed paper seal. Some neat slits and a small area of paper loss caused by the opening of the letter, not affecting the text or signature, otherwise VG. £150-200 Pope Alexander VII (1599-1667) Cardinal Fabio Chigi. Pope of the Roman Catholic Church 1655-67. Theresa of Spain (1651-1673) Holy Roman Empress, daughter of King Philip IV of Spain and Mariana of Austria. For political reasons, as demonstrated by the present letter, Margaret Theresa was betrothed as a child to her maternal uncle and paternal cousin, Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor (1640-1705). Their wedding took place in Vienna on 12th December 1666. Despite a difference of some eleven years in their ages, they were very happy together and shared a love of theatre and music. Margaret Theresa, weakened by giving birth to four children and suffering many miscarriages, died at the young age of 21.

CHRISTINA: (1626-1689) Queen of Sweden 1633-54. D.S., Christina, as Queen of the Swedes, Goths and Wends, two pages, folio, Stockholm, 23rd August 1645. The manuscript document states that it has been necessary to send two cavalry squadrons from the province of Scania to Pommern together with other people under General Carl Gustaf Wrangel, to the main army in Germany, and that following the peace treaty the entire army will have left Scania by the 23rd September. The document continues to give instructions that the vessels and boats which were previously sent to Pommern, and remained there during the summer, under the command of the cavalry's Commander-in-Chief, shall sail to Ystad and Landskrona without delay, also explaining that there is a shortage of boats to transport the cavalry in any other way and stressing the importance of timeliness in the shipment of the cavalry. Signed by the Queen at the conclusion. With integral address leaf bearing a blind embossed paper seal. Some slight, minor traces of professional repairs, not affecting the text or signature. About VG. £300-400. Carl Gustav Wrangel (1613-1676) Swedish Noble, Statesman and Military Commander. In 1644, during the Torstenson War, Wrangel commanded a fleet at sea, which defeated the Danes at Fehmarn on 23rd October. In 1646 he returned to Germany as a Field Marshal.

AKIHITO: (1933- ) Emperor of Japan 1989- . Rare A.L.S., Akihito, as Crown Prince, three pages, 8vo, Tokyo, 3rd July 1957, to Princess Lilian, on a white card featuring a blind embossed Imperial seal. The Prince explains that he takes the opportunity of the recent appointment of the Ambassador of Japan to Belgium, to send the present letter, and asks his correspondent `How is the weather in Brussels now? I remember it was very agreeable in July when I visited there four years ago. Here in Tokyo it will be quite hot very soon. I am intending to stay for about a month in August in Karuizawa, where the weather is very similar to that of Brussels, and I shall enjoy playing tennis mostly there.´ Further referring to a Japanese ancient fishing practice `Before going up there, I will go to Gifu to see cormorant fishing. Have you ever heard about it? It is an old traditional way of fishing in which cormorants are used to catch fish in the river.´ Akihito concludes by asking his correspondent about the progress in the preparation of the International Exposition in Brussels and proclaims `I am quite sure it will be a grand occasion of festivity.´ Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by the Prince. An excellent letter. EX £1000-1500 Princess Lilian of Belgium (1916-2002) Also known as Princess of Réthy. Second wife of King Leopold III of the Belgians. Lilian agreed to marry the King in 1941, but declined the title of Queen. It was agreed that any descendants of the King's new marriage would be excluded from succession to the throne.

PAVLOVICH MICHAEL: (1798-1849) Grand Duke of Russia, son of Tsar Paul I. A.L.S., Michel, one page, 4to, n.p., n.d. (c.1831), to [Count Orloff], on stationery featuring a blind embossed eagle and crown, in French. Pavlovich forwards a paper (no longer present) from Count Tchernitcheff and asks that Orloff should give his orders in order not to lose any time, and concludes by stating that he will return to town at around 9pm, asking Orloff to come and see him at his home. L.S., Alexander, (a fine example in Cyrillic, incorporating a large flourish), two pages, folio, Saint Petersburg, 30th January 1819, to His Majesty the King of Naples, in Cyrillic. The manuscript letter announces 'Our most dear Duke, brother and friend, deign to recall Our Privy Councillor and Knight of different Orders, Count Dmitry Mocenich, obligingly devoted to Us, who is at the Court of Your Majesty as an Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary' and continues 'We inform Your Majesty about this and ask in a friendly manner to dismiss Our Envoy from you and accept the assurances in Our sincere friendship and highest devotion'. Countersigned at the foot by Karl Nesselrode (1780-1862) Russian Count and Diplomat. With blank integral leaf. Accompanied by the original envelope wrapper bearing a large blind embossed paper seal to the verso. ALEXANDRA FEODOROVNA: (1872-1918) Empress Consort of Russia, wife of Tsar Nicholas II. The last Tsarina of Russia, known for her notorious friendship with the Russian mystic Rasputin. A very fine signed sepia 10 x 13 photograph, the image showing the Empress seated in an elegant three quarter length pose in semi profile. Photograph by Boissonnas and Eggler and bearing their blind embossed stamp to the lower left of the mount. Signed ('Alexandra') in dark fountain pen ink to the lower photographer's mount and dated 1914 in her hand. Rare. Some light age wear to the edges of the photographer's mount and with a few professional repairs to the verso, otherwise VG. £2000-3000. BALFOUR ARTHUR JAMES: (1848-1930) British Prime Minister 1902-05. T.L.S., Arthur James Balfour, one page, 8vo, Great Queen Street, London, 4th May 1891, to Colonel Edward Saunderson, on the blind embossed stationery of the Irish Office. Balfour states that he has received his correspondent's letter and Resolution adopted at a Unionist meeting and comments 'I hope you will convey to those who took part in the proceedings my thanks for the terms in which they have expressed their confidence in the policy pursued by Her Majesty's present advisers, and my appreciation of their very kind personal references to myself.' With blank integral leaf. Together with a L.S., Arthur James Balfour, two pages, 8vo, Whitehall, London, 28th February 1899, to Frederick Verney, on the blind embossed stationery of The First Lord of the Treasury, marked Private. Balfour responds to his correspondent's letter and suggests that he apply to the Foreign Office, 'by whom all questions in which Siam and Great Britain are jointly interested are dealt with'. Beaton writes a letter of largely religious content, 'Quamqua[m] s[uum] D[omini] N[oster] mandato, quo me p[er] suu[m] breve[m], ut in proxi[m]a quarta feria cineru[m], libentissime atq[ue] humill[is] parre cupio Gaudeoq[ue] vehementer, eam mihi occasionem alliquando oblatam esse qua et illius S[anctus] i[n]visere, ac cora[m] venerari, v[est]raq[ue] r[everendisi]me D[omini] caeteroru[m]q[ue] nostri ordinis su[m]moru[m] viroru[m] virtute[m], ac sapientia propins [illegible] possem. Cogor tamen, uti in pu[n]tia ad illius s[anctus] scribo, tantis p[er] illius clementia uti, absentiaeq[ue] meae venia[m] orare[m], donec ad eam profectione[m] sere[nisi]mi d[o]m[ini] mei, favour[m] et benevolentia[m] impetrare[m] ero, ad qu[a]e sup[er] eade[m] re abunde ia[m] scripsi. Bryce has titled his draft 'The Unionist Association to promote Self Government for Ireland' and states, in part, 'Those who are opposed to the Bill for the Better Government of Ireland are anxious to do two things (1) to monopolise the name of “Unionist” & (2) to brand all those who differ from them as “Separationists”. The supporters of self government for Ireland consider the integrity of the United Kingdom as an essential element of the scheme. In order to emphasize the fact it is proposed to form a “Unionist Association to promote self government for Ireland”' and should include all those who are opposed to Separation and 'are anxious to support the Principle that Ireland should manage all affairs that are specifically and exclusively Irish'. The integral leaf bears the names of over thirty politicians etc., supporters of Bryce's proposal, most of the names in ink or pencil in Bryce's hand, although some signed by the politicians themselves (Foster, Swinburne, Borlase, Reid, Lacaita, Newnes, Strong etc.). Together with an A.L.S., J Bryce, one page, 8vo, n.p. (London), 15th July n.y., to Mrs. Evans, on the blind embossed stationery of the House of Commons Library, politely declining an invitation as he is already engaged to dine in another suburb of London, and also including a second A.L.S., J Bryce, one page, 8vo, Bryanston Square, London, 29th January n.y., to a gentleman, arranging a dinner appointment with his correspondent. The draft very slightly irregularly and neatly trimmed at the edges and with traces of former mounting to the left edge of the first page and verso, not affecting the text or signatures.
