Hain-Copinger 6928. Goff R264. This copy conforms to the description given in Polain 3374 for the Ratdolt edition of 1482. An incomplete copy of Rolewinck’s popular world chronology, containing many small woodcut views of different cities. Werner Rolewinck was a carthusian monk who lived in Cologne. The crude but early woodcut views include Venice, Jerusalem, Syracuse, Lyons, Milan, etc. The Seilern copy of this edition, lacking the first eight leaves, was sold at Christies in 2003. (1)

The manuscript document is addressed to Thomas Secker, Archbishop of Canterbury, and concerns the appointment of John Ewer, Bishop Elect of Llandaff, allowing him to also retain the `Canonry….of our Free Chapel of St. George in Our Castle of Windsor.` With blind embossed paper seal affixed. Some light overall age wear and some neat splitting to the folds, just affecting the seal, but not touching the signatures. Rare, G John Ewer (d.1774) Bishop of Llandaff and Bishop of Bangor, remembered for his attack on the American colonists, prompted by their indifference to episcopacy.

BALFOUR A. J.: (1848-1930) British Prime Minister 1902-05. Two Ls.S., Arthur James Balfour, seven pages (total), 8vo, 10 Downing Street, Whitehall, 14th July 1898 and 23rd May 1901, both to F. J. Campbell, on the printed stationery of the First Lord of the Treasury. In the first letter Balfour politely refuses an invitation although comments `The excellence of the scheme itself and the fact that it is dedicated to the memory of my old friend Mr. W. H. Smith give a double motive to this regret`. In the second letter Balfour thanks Campbell for his invitation to take part in a meeting at the Mansion House in aid of the Royal Normal College for the Blind, although again politely declines, explaining `As I have stated on previous occasions, I have the warmest sympathy with the work of the College, and wish it all success. My duties as Leader of the House, however, will make it necessary for me to be at the House soon after 3 o`clock-the hour fixed for the meeting.` Some light, minor foxing to the first letter, generally VG, 2. William Henry Smith (1825-1891) English Bookseller and Newsagent of the family firm W. H. Smith. Elected as a Member of Parliament in 1868, Smith held various Government posts including First Lord of the Admiralty 1877-80 and Leader of the House of Commons 1887-91.

MacDonald writes, in full, `This insignificant expression of my best wishes to you both is sent simply because my thoughts are so personal to you both that your discerning eyes & hearts will, I hope, see that a modest form is best fitted to the containing feelings.` Together with an attractive D.S., J. Ramsay MacDonald, one page, slim 4to, n.p., December 1930. The printed document was issued for The Great Fair of 1930 and intended for a recipient who had elected to become a President of a Golden Circle and undertaken to raise a sum of not less than £5, the money being donated to the Childwelfare Association and the Liverpool Orphanage. EDEN ANTHONY: (1897-1977) British Prime Minister 1955-57. Interesting, early A.L.S., R Anthony Eden, two pages, 8vo, London, 12th May 1924, to the Speaker (John Henry Whitley, 1866-1935), on the blind embossed stationery of the House of Commons. Eden politely asks Whitley if he may participate for a few minutes in the next days debate on New Import duties and continues to explain, `My reasons for troubling you are that my constituency is very closely affected by the fate of these duties. More than any constituency in the country perhaps (except its neighbours Coventry) it is deeply interested in the future of the motor trade. Not only are there several factories in the constituency but a large number of my constituents from Warwick & Leamington & Kenilworth go daily to work in Coventry. In consequence I have received a great number of representations about these duties and I have promised to do what I can to represent their views on a matter which so vitally affects them.` A good letter with a scarce, early form of Eden`s signature. About EX Eden was elected as a Conservative Member of Parliament for Warwick & Leamington in the December 1923 General Election.
