CHURCHILL WINSTON S.: (1874-1965) British Prime Minister 1940-45, 1951-55. Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1953. Autograph Envelope Signed, addressed in Churchill’s hand in dark fountain pen ink to Mrs. [George] Scrivings at 12 Bolton Street, London W, England. Signed (‘W S Churchill’) to the lower left corner. With an Egyptian postage stamp affixed and post marked at Khartoum, 24th December 1907. With the blind embossed crest of the Colonial Office to the verso. Some light overall age wear and a few minor stains, about VG Churchill’s correspondent was Mrs. George Scrivings, the widow of Churchill’s servant, who were both employed at the first house Churchill owned in Bolton Street, just off Piccadilly. George Scrivings accompanied Churchill on a journey to East Africa in 1907 but was never to return as he caught a tropical illness and died there. Churchill, grief-stricken, buried him close to the Victoria Falls and on his return home not only made a lifelong provision for George's widow but also gave financial help for many years to his bereaved mother too. Churchill served as Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies from 1905-08.

STC 19639. This work by the legal writer John Perkins (d.1545?) was first published in c.1560. The Profitable Book was intended as a supplement to Littleton`s Tenures, dealing mainly with points of conveyancing which were not to be found in Littleton. (1)

The first title ÒDomestic EconomyÓ is dedicated to William Strutt (1756-1830), who invented much of the equipment in Derby Infirmary. This volume was probably his own copy as it bears the bookplate of his son Edward Strutt (1801-1880) who became the 1st Baron Belper. Edward Strutt was a British Liberal Party politician, who served as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster from 1852 to 1854 under Lord Aberdeen. (1)

Despiau..., with Several Corrections and Additions, Particularly a Large Table of the Chances or Odds at Play, The whole recommended as an useful Book for Schools, by Dr. Hutton, Professor of Mathematics, at Woolwich, 1st English edition, London: for G. Kearsley; Bell and Bradfute; and Brash and Reid, by W. The first French edition was published in London in 1799 under the title Choix d` amusements physiques et mathematiques. The volume contains a large collection of mathematical and physical curiosities, including chapters on arithmetic ÒTo arrange 30 criminals in such a manner as to save 15 of them, &c.Ó, ÒA lady lamenting that her age was triple that of her daughterÓ, Palingenesy Ò... the art of reviving the dead and making the image of a deceased person appear in a glass jarÓ, and amusing secrets ÒTo make people in a room have a hideous appearanceÓ. A Popular, A Mathematical, A Mechanical, and a Philosophical Treatise, 2 vols., 1st ed., Cambridge, 1738, subscribers list, eighty-three folding engraved diagrammatic plates (complete), a few minor tears/splits mostly to first few plates (one plate torn to lower margin with slight loss to ruled border), a few ink marks and minor marginal browning, contemporary blind-panelled calf, recently rebacked, morocco title labels, 4to. Babson 161. A Compleat System of Opticks was an influential work on the subject. It includes Jurin`s Essay upon Distinct and Indistinct Vision at end of vol. 2. Smith was the founder of Smith`s prizes at Cambridge, which was awarded to two or more students each year for the greatest progress in mathematics and natural philosophy. The prize was awarded every year from 1769 to 1998 (except 1917). (2)

GUSTAVUS II ADOLPHUS: (1594-1632) King of Sweden 1611-32, known as `The Lion of the North`, regarded as one of the greatest military commanders of all time and credited as the founder of Sweden as a Great Power. Rare D.S., Gustavus Adolphus, as King, one page, folio, Army Camp at Berson (near Kokenhusen, present day Latvia), 6th December 1625. The manuscript document is an Order to the General Quarter Master of the field army to secure sufficient provisions of food for the troops and ordering supplies for Gerdt Didrichsson, Master of the Stables, of hides, alum, salt, tallow, nails for shoeing horses etc., and money to also be made available. Signed by the King at the foot. With integral address leaf bearing a blind embossed paper seal. An attractive and clean document, VG The present document is signed shortly before the King`s significant victory in the Battle of Wallhof on 7th January 1626, fought between Sweden and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

Brief T.L.S., May Ling Soong Chiang, one page, 4to, Chungking, Szechuan, 6th December 1943, to Sir Frederic Eggleston of the Australian Legation, on the blind embossed printed stationery of the Headquarters of the Generalissimo. May-Ling writes, in full, `I am sending you a sample of Turkish Delight and Egyptian dates which I hope you will like`. Two file holes to the left edge and a couple of small staple holes to the upper left corner, none of which affect the text or signature, otherwise VG Sir Frederic Eggleston (1875-1954) Australian Diplomat, Lawyer, Politician & Author.
