A Georgian mahogany longcase clock, the arched dial with 'High Tide at Bristol' key indicator, silvered chapter ring, subsidiary seconds and date aperture, signed Fran's Weller, Bristol, the case with dentil cornice and blind fret carved frieze above a long trunk door and panelled base on ogee bracket feet, 222cm high/see illustration Condition Report: The case has been restored and re-polished, locks and hinges replaced and hood pillar capitals and bases re-gilded. Interior re-blocked and one leg is loose but present. The face and movement have been restored, the chapter ring replaced and spandrels re-gilded, the moon dial repainted and the ratchets for the same replaced. There is no subsidiary pointer for the tides. There is a painted pointer on the moon dial; the ratchet on the striking train not working therefore fully unwound. The seat board is not original.

THREE CANTONESE CARVED AND PIERCED IVORY BRISEE FANS, Qing Dynasty, late 18th century, each with blind carved decorative guards, 26.5cm, 25cm and 14.7cm long respectively. Provenance: Private Collection, Knightsbridge. Condition report: The largest example has at least seven small pierced vertical line sections with damage and there is staining in patches. The medium example has very bad damage on the far left stick and very small puncture marks and losses throughout. The small example (considered for a child) has gluing and losses on the first three sticks from the left side, a crack in one more stick, and old repairs to two others and losses on another central example. Also staining. All three sold af.
CHINA TRADE INSURANCE AGREEMENTPartially-printed D.S., 1p. 16" x 20 1/2", Philadelphia, May 10, 1815, a contract from the Philadelphia Insurance Company, insuring the ship PACIFIC for $16,500 for a voyage from Philadelphia to Canton and back again. The document is completed and signed by the owner of the ship, Nathan Trotter, and signed at the conclusion by the president of the insurance company, Pennsylvania congressman ROBERT WAIN (1765-1836). The contract insures the ship-owners from many hazards, including: "...Men of War, Fires, Enemies, Pirates, Rovers, Thieves, Jettisons, Letters of Mart, and Counter Mart, Surprisals, Takings at Sea, Arrests, Restraints and Detainments of all Kings, Princes, or People, of what Nation, Condition, or Quality so ever..." The blind-embossed seal of the company is located near the beginning of the document. Endorsed on the back by Trotter and a registrar, with modern pencil notations. The contract is split horizontally in two along a fold line, with the upper right section similarly separated. Fair to good.

Signed and inscribed publication, "Calendar of the Doshisha Preparatory Collegiate Theological Scientific and Politico-Law Schools for the Year 1891-92" (Tokyo: Seishi-Bunsha), 1891, 63pp. 8vo., a catalog containing faculty lists, course lists, and illustrations of the Doshisha School in Kyoto, of which Kozaki was president. Signed and inscribed by Kozaki in black ink on the front cover, which is detached but present; GEORGE YEH (1904-1981) Minister of Foreign Affairs and Ambassador to the United States for the Republic of China. T.L.S., 1p. 4to, [n.p.], Jan. 17, 1953, to Robert R. Gros, Yeh thanks his correspondent for a previous letter, signed in black ink at the conclusion, with a retained copy of Gros's letter present; TSENG CHI-TSE (1839-1890) Chinese minister to Russia, France and Britain. Signatures in Chinese and English on a 1 3/4" x 3 1/4" card, with a pencil identifying inscription at left; LO TSUNG-YEE Chinese diplomat, represented China at the 1928 meeting of the Olympic Games Committee. Signature as "T.Y. Lo" on a 1" x 1 3/4" slip of card, laid down on a larger sheet with the printed address of the Chinese Legation in London; NAKASHIMA RIKIZO (1858-1918) Japanese Educator and Kantian Philosopher. Signatures in Japanese and English on a 3 1/2" x 4 1/2" card; LO FENG-LUH (1850-1903), Chinese ambassador to Britain. Bold signatures in Chinese and English on a 5" x 7 1/2" piece of stationery, blind-embossed with the image of a dragon and laid down on a larger backing; TAKASAKI MASAKAZE (1836-1912) Japanese Imperial Court councilor and privy councilor, later chief of the Imperial Poem Office. Signature in Japanese on a 3/4" x 2 3/4" slip of paper cut from a letter, accompanied by an autograph letter from Takasaki's son, Masamitsu, 2pp. 8vo., Tokyo, May 2, 1916, transmitting the signature; WANG CHUNG-HUI (1881-1958), first Minister of Justice for the Chinese Republic. Signature on a 2 1/2" x 3 3/4" card, in blue ink; ZAIZE (1876-1929) Manchu noble, advocate for the adoption of a constitutional monarchy in China. Signature in Chinese and English as "Prince Tsai Iseh" on a 2" x 3 1/4" card, adding his title and the date May 13, 1906; WEI TAO-MING (1899-1978) Chinese ambassador to the United States during World War II. Signature in Chinese and English on a 3" x 5" card; ZHANG YINHUAN (1837-1900), Chinese ambassador to Great Britain and the United States. Signature in English on a 3 1/2" x 4 1/2" card, adding his title as ambassador to Britain, along with a second 2" x 5" card bearing his signature in Chinese; and V.K. WELLINGTON KOO (1888-1985) Chinese ambassador to France, Britain and the United States, representative at the Paris Peace Conference, founding member of both the League of Nations and the United Nations. Signature in English on 1 1/2" x 3" card, along with an unsigned typed document, 19pp. 4to., "An Address to be Delivered at the Academy of Political & Social Science, Philadelphia, January 29, 1916", almost certainly written by Koo. Some items bear mounting remnants or identifying inscriptions in pencil on the verso, else very good. Seventeen pieces.
A George III mahogany chest on chest, the moulded and dentil cornice above a blind fret carved frieze, with two short and three graduated long drawers, the base having a brushing slide above three graduated long drawers, on ogee bracket feet, 113 cm wide See illustration Condition report Report by GHVarious losses to blind fretwork and some patched and repaired sections, notably on the right hand side and the rear left around the top. Cornice generally chipped, dented and with losses to moulding, particularly down the right hand side. Various chips and losses to cock beading and several handles loose, but all seemingly present and correct. Drawers all in reasonable condition, a couple with cracked bottom boards, but otherwise reasonably good. Usual age related wear, light cracking to veneer, dents, scratches etc. Very much saleroom fresh condition.The height is 195 cm

A silver wire inlaid bronze figure of a sage riding a carp, he sits casually reading a scroll as the fish leaps, 16cm (6.25 in) high Other Notes: The Japanese depict the immortal Kinko riding a carp in this way but the silver wire inlay on his clothes suggest that this is Chinese rather than Japanese. Kinko's origins were adapted from a Chinese immortal There are blind holes in the fish's fins suggesting that this was once fitted to some sort of base object.

A fine quality early George III serpentine fronted mahogany Dressing Chest, c. 1760, the figured moulded top over a brushing slide with baize inset and four graduating drawers, the top drawer fitted with an adjustable inset mirror and shaped compartments, the covers with ivory handles, the drawers with original decorated brass loop handles and escutcheons, the canted corners with blind fret carving on ogee bracket feet. White marks/scuff marks to part of surface, lettering good. Inside - generally good condition, very slightly yellowed at edges. Slight bashes to top corner of first few pages. Minimal discolouration, no apparent damage to pages. Slightly dirty finger prints 1-2. Yellow marks and pencil booksellers mark to 1st blank page.Front - slight watermarks to edges of cover, slightly dented. Slight discolouration of silver in lettering and blind stamp.Back - bashes to edges, watermarks worse in back cover and all over.
