Philips Galle (1537-1612) -The misery of human life - Complete series (6) / Description: Rare complete series in 6 plates on the miseries of human life, all numbered and the first plate signed PG. 1563 with the publishers address Car Collart excu. The images were designed by Maarten van Heemskerck and engraved by Philips Galle. Plate 1: Man is born naked. An allegorical scene with personification of nature handing a naked child to a woman in the center. On the right, another woman is holding a swaddled baby. The surrounding landscape is filled with a variety of animals. Plate 2: Man must learn everything. In the foreground, two women are busy with some toddlers who need help. In the background, the landscape with rock formation and coastline is filled with animals. Plate 3: Man is exposed to danger and disease. Six men walk in the foreground including a blind man, a cripple and a man with a toothache. Plate 4: Man is tormented by sin. Personifications of Greed (Avarita), Wrong Opinion (Opnio), Envy (Invidia), Sadness (Tristitia) and Haughtiness (Superbia) afflict man (Homo). The character Conscience (Conscientia) tries to lead him on the right path by using a mirror that offers insight and a rod that represents punishment. Plate 5: Man is beset by poverty, imprisonment and death. In this allegorical scene, we see poverty as an old woman, a man in chains and a man who is just falling on a sword. In the background, a body falls from a rock with a burning town. Plate 6: Man is always fighting. Spread across the print we behold fighting pairs of men. In contrast, we find pairs of animals quietly enjoying each other's company. --- A very rare complete series of humanistic prints seldom found on the market. Not in the Rijksmuseum, and only two on six in the British Museum. / Dimensions: 18,40 x 24,00 cm / Condition: Good impressions on interlaced C's watermarked laid paper. Still in the original full sheets with wide margins. Good condition with occasionally some dust soiling of the outer margins. Limited Edition, 8/100, Ultrachrome print, features Bowie as his alias Ziggy Stardust, printed 2009, hand signed by the photographer, Duffy Archive blind stamp lower margin and Archive stamp on reverse, paper size 20 x 20 inches; with an accompanying Certificate of Authenticity issued by Proud Galleries London on behalf of the photographer. Taken by the photographer during the second series of Five Sessions with David Bowie. Duffys photograph from 1973 is the revolutionary and iconic cover of Bowies album Aladdin Sane, referred to as the Mona Lisa of Pop. Duffy asked what the album was going to be called, and David replied, A Lad Insane. Duffy interpreted this as Aladdin Sane. The Kinks on Hampstead Heath, London, 1968 - Artist proof digital print, hand signed by the photographer, and further hand signed by the Kinks, Ray Davies, Dave Davies and Mick Avory, photographers blind stamp centre margin and ink stamp on reverse, paper size 16 x 20 inches; with accompanying Certificate of Authenticity issued by Proud Galleries, London, on behalf of the photographer.I met the Kinks at Kenwood House on Hampstead Heath, London, as it seemed to be Rays favourite location for shooting. One of the colour images from this session later became the back cover of Village Green Preservation Society. This was the last shoot I did with the original band which included Pete Quaife. It was many years later that I did get paid for the use of the photos., when Village Green was reissued, and Ray in his book ' X Ray', said I did all the photos for the original album. Not true! This is the issue including engraved plates of the various temples and monuments and is rarely seen in large paper format.The second records the 1848 sale of the majority of the great art collection at Stowe following the bankruptcy of the Duke of Buckingham and Chandos, who was rumoured to have left for the Continent with debts exceeding £1,000,000. It totalled £75,562 4s 6d over 35 days, and included the famous "Chandos Portrait" of Shakespeare which sold to the Earl of Ellesmere for £372 15s. and in 1856 became the first donation to the newly-created National Portrait Gallery.

Excursions in the County of Cornwall, large paper copy, half-title, engraved portrait, additional vignette title, folding map and 47 plates only (of 48, lacking plate of Carclew and pp.59-60, supplied in loosely inserted facsimile), light foxing, mostly to tissue guards or text, bookplate of Sir Graves Sawle Bart. of Penrice (p.49), modern half morocco, spine gilt, by J.C.Avery for Allen Thompson, with binder's manuscript note bound in at end, 1824 § Britton (John) Devonshire & Cornwall Illustrated, 2 vol. in 1, engraved maps, additional vignette titles and plates (each with two views) after Thomas Allom and W.H.Bartlett, rather foxed, light water-staining at beginning and end, contemporary half roan, gilt-stamped roan label to upper cover, rubbed, 1832; and another, v.s. (5)⁂ The first is a handsome reproduction of a notorious rarity. It was originally published in 1846 in a very limited number (probably only a few more than the 52 for subscribers), the first of a projected survey of the mansions of England and Wales. Five further volumes on Lancaster and Chester were produced in 1847-50 but none thereafter due to Twycross's death in 1852.

Pavli epistolas commentarii, woodcut printer's device and seventeenth century manuscript ownership inscription in ink to title, bookplate, lacking OO5, second Z gathering mis-bound, scattered worm holes within text throughout, ornately blind-stamped panelled calf over wooden boards, covers with eternal knot centre-pieces, borders composed of medallion profile portraits ?of peoples of different nations, gilt acorns (some dulling), and rosettes, amongst other decoration, gilt title to head of inner panel of upper cover, spine in compartments, remains of metal clasps, remnants of paper label to spine, some light wear in places, [VD 16 J 433], folio, Basel, Johann Herwagen, 1536.⁂ A previous owner's note suggests that the binding is by the 'Mauresken Meister of Basel', about whom we have found very little information.
