An early 18th Century oak longcase clock with thirty hour movement striking on a bell, the gilt brass dial and silvered chapter ring with Roman numerals and inscribed `John Wickersham, East Greensted`, cornered by putti and scroll pierced spandrels, the hood with moulded pediment above a blind fretwork frieze, glazed door and columns, the trunk with rectangular door, on a bracket plinth base, height approx 200cm, with a pendulum and weight.
Very fine Victorian blotter in full red crushed morocco with elaborate tooling in gilt, green and blind. Silk doublures, superb illuminated calligraphic presentation inset to rear, a presentation to Robert Blezard, Pool Park from the people of Ruthin in North Wales. Signed W. Green, dated 1876

MacGregor Laird, & R.A.K. Oldfield. NARRATIVE OF AN EXPEDITION INTO THE INTERIOR OF AFRICA BY THE RIVER NIGER In The Steam Vessels Quorra And Alburkah, In 1832, 1833, And 1834. 8vo 2 volumes. Rebound black full leather blind tooled front & rear, raised bands to spine with 6 panels with gilt on green leather title labels. Nicely executed, edges left rough-cut, marbled eps. 5 illustrations plus map. Volume 2 top corners bumped. ff are tanned & spotted, the plates quite heavily. overall a sound and attractive set. In 1831 Laird formed a company for the commercial development of the Niger regions, the lower course of the Niger having been made known that year by Richard and John Lander. In 1832, the company sent two small ships to the Niger, the Alburkah, a paddle-wheel steamer of fifty-five tons designed by Laird, the first iron vessel to make an ocean voyage, and the Quorra. Laird went with the expedition led by Richard Lander and forty-eight Europeans, all but nine of whom died from fever, Lander, from wounds. Laird went up the Niger to the confluence of the Benue which he was the first white man to ascend. He did not go far up the river but formed an accurate idea as to its source. Major Hook WITH SWORD AND STATUTE on the Cape of Good Hope Frontier 224 x 143 x 30 mm Detailed journal of the history of the frontier wars in South Africa from the 1840s to the Boer War and political developments up to 1907. Major Hook was closely associated with these events as an administrator and soldier. The frontispiece shows Fred Crewe rescuing Major Hook`s son Godfrey in Matabeleland. The original of this picture was presented to the Durban Art Gallery by Cecil Rhodes. The book is full of personal descriptions of dramatic historical events and makes very good reading. A scarce book, not often on sale. 32 b&w photographs and sketches, plus a photograph of Sir Walter Currie not included in the table of illustrations. 17 prelim pp and pp 1-434. Red cloth-covered boards, gilt titles on front and spine. Blind stamped frame design on front and back cover. Top corners slightly bumped. Top and bottom edges of spine have small de-laminating tears. Spine sunned. Some foxing throughout, and on tissue guard of frontispiece and title page. Brown stains on prelim pp. Foxing pp 430-434. Back and front endpapers have thin cracks. No DJ. Apart from the defects noted, the book is in Very Good condition. On the ffe the author has written a gift inscription to the famous South African politician, Senator F S Malan. Malan has written his own name and address on the front endpaper. This book is the revised edition, published simultaneously by Juta (this red cloth)in Cape Town and Greaves, Pass and Co (green cloth) in London in 1907. McLEOD L Travels in Eastern Africa, with a Narrative of a Residence in Mozambique, 2 vols 195 x 140 mm The author spent some time in South African and then went on to Mozambique where he was the British Consul for a period. Much of the book is on the produce and commerce of the region and the effects of continued slavery. The author experienced the conspiracies between slavers and government officials personally and was at one stage attacked. 341+347 pp, with frontis and vignette in each volume plus folding map.
