A sedan chair, possibly built by Duvernoy, son of Avignon, circa 1762-5, with full gilded sculptures to the original exterior woodwork, colour paintings of the seasons to the panels, lined in original deep blue velvet with a single remaining silk roller blind, the interior has blue comb cartisane fringes with taffeta, glass pull strings together with brass window position stops, seat cushion and valance, the floor has the original leather covering, the front door glass has been replaced but the side glasses are original, 84cm wide x 99cm deep, 173cm high, together with two long black cloaks and two tricorn hatsThe leather roof later replaced. the nailed leather rim of the top worn and with small losses. carved frame gillding dull and rubbed in parts. Hinged and carrying mounts in iron tarnished and a little rusty. the painted leather panels with chipping to paint around the edges where nailed in place.painted landscape to lower cartouches dry and faded and scuffed. Signs of old woodworn to base. right outside panel partially detached to lower section. left leather panel loose and detaching to back. Glass panels and front frame replaced. velvet interior worn. Locking plate missing to door. All over wear and scuffs commensurate with age and use.

The Anatomy of Wit, woodcut device on title, Printed for William Leake, 1613, together 2 works in 1, both largely printed in black letter, final leaf of second work laid down, later blind-stamped morocco, g.e., joints slightly rubbed, [STC 17079 and 17063], 4to *** "Euphues, the Anatomy of Wit is arguably the first English novel although it has a very thin plotline". (UCLA Clark Memorial Library). First published in 1578, this and its sequel Euphues and His England (1580) "aimed at providing lively court entertainment, at the same time supplying instructive lessons about friendship and love." These are probably the 14th and 15th editions respectively, the last to be separately published, although probably intended to be bound together. Provenance: Charles Butler of Warren Wood, Hatfield (bookplate).

[Fletcher (John)] Valentinian: A Tragedy, edited by the Earl of Rochester, Epilogue leaf at end, a few leaves trimmed affecting headlines, modern blind-stamped calf, [Wing F1354], 4to, Printed for Timothy Goodwin, 1685. *** Fletcher (1579-1625) composed Valentinian without the help of his collaborator Beaumont. It was produced before March 1618/19 though not published until 1647. This version, reworked by the Earl of Rochester, was probably presented in 1683. The three prologues are by Aphra Behn.

Coryate (?1577-1617) studied at Oxford without taking a degree and ended up at the court of James I, where he gained considerable popularity as a wit and buffoon. He used money inherited from his father to travel, setting off in 1608 and visiting some 45 cities in 7 countries in 5 months on foot, by cart, boat and horse. It is reckoned he covered almost 2,000 miles, over half of which was accomplished in one pair of shoes, mended only once and, on his return, hung up in the church at Odcombe in Somerset (his place of birth) , where they remained for over a century. Despite his achievements, he found it difficult to get the account of his journeys published and so appealed to all he knew to write commendatory verses about himself and the book. Among the more than 60 contributors of mock-heroic verse were Ben Jonson (acrostic on b4) , John Donne, Inigo Jones, George Chapman and Michael Drayton. Provenance: Boies Penrose II (bookplate)

N[orton]. for Hu. Mosley, 1645. *** Waller's first and most important collection, published while he was in exile. The first unauthorised edition was published by Thomas Walkley in the same year (Wing W495). This edition, purporting to be "Printed by a Copy of his [Waller's] own hand-writing", is commonly known as the "first authorised edition", although likely not. It provides the best text until the edition of 1664. Provenance: "Walter Scott 5 June 1652" (ink ownership inscription to front free endpaper); Walter Hirst (bookplate).

Thence by descent and sold by the Duke of Norfolk, Sotheby's 15th November 1994 lot 17 Literature: 'Catalogue of All the Furniture and Effects in Carlton Hall Selby', 1854, p.111, listed in the 'First floor East side of the Wing. The first Breakfast Room'. Carlton Hall was built in the early 17th century, and substantially enlarged by Henry Stapleton, 9th Baron Beaumont in 1873-75 who engaged Edward Welby Pugin to carry out the extensive works to create Carlton Towers, the great Gothic fantasy which stands today. The side cabinet is early 19th century with later carved Chinese additions, which depict Chinese mythological emblems and figures, including a five-clawed Imperial dragon and the figure of Shou-Lao, with his peach, emblematic of longevity.
