Framed limited edition print depicting horse racing scene, signed in pencil to border with blind stamp

A George III oak and mahogany crossbanded eight day longcase clock, the brass Roman numeral dial signed 'Butler Bolton', with date aperture and subsidiary seconds dial, with broken swans neck pediment and trunk with blind fret detailing and fluted corner pilasters, on later and shortened and later bracket feet, 214cm H CONDITION REPORT: The glass to the hood is cracked. The trunk door is not warped but it does have an old crack. General age wear patina to the surface throughout, some losses and old chips here and there. Small loss to the bottom right corner of the door and a small but poor repair to the bottom edge of the door just to the left of this. Some losses also to the flowers as part of the scroll pediment. The plinth base is later and short in height. The clock is not currently running.

Butterflies.- Wilkes (Benjamin) One Hundred and Twenty Copper-Plates of English Moths and Butterflies, second edition, list of subscribers,120 exquisite hand-coloured plates, plate XIV trimmed at lower edge into plate-mark, occasional light offsetting, a couple of spots, small hole in index leaf at end but no loss of text, contemporary green straight-grain morocco, elaborately stamped in gilt and blind, slightly faded, extremities very slightly rubbed, g.e., 4to, [Nissen 4410a], for Benjamin White, 1773. ⁂ A lovely copy of this beautiful work with the plates depicting butterflies and moths against extensive backgrounds of plants, these plants after drawings by Ehret and van Huysum. The short 2pp. list of subscribers includes Joseph Dandridge (who gave Wilkes open access to his private collection of entomological specimens), Dr Christopher Jacob Trew (who died 4 years before the book was published), and Sir Hans Sloane (who likewise had died some 20 years earlier). This would suggest that the list was perhaps gleaned from the original edition, which had appeared in 1747-49.

Middle East.- After Emile-Jean-Horace Vernet (1789-1863) Voyage au Désert, mixed-method engraving and etching, by Rollet, a good impression on thick wove paper with full margins, platemark 610 x 710 mm, sheet 755 x 1020 mm. (29 3/4 x 40 1/4 in), some spotting and browning, mainly to margins, with minor damp-stains to lower corners in margins, well outside the image, and with handling crease to upper left corner with minor tear, only in margin and well outside the image, unframed, three blind-stamps alongside lettered title, published by Gambart & Junin, London, 1846.

Classics.- Homer. The Iliad and The Odyssey [graece], 4 vol., Greek text, contemporary russia, stamped in gilt and blind, joints cracked, rubbed, Oxford, 1801 § Euripides. Opera omnia, 9 vol., Greek and Latin text, foxing, contemporary vellum, gilt, spines a little soiled, Glasgow, 1821; and a quantity of others, Classics, 4to and 8vo (qty)

Britain.- Turner (Joseph Mallord William) Picturesque Views on the Southern Coast of England, 2 vol., first edition, 48 engraved plates and 32 vignettes by George and W.B Cooke and others after Turner and others, occasional foxing, contemporary russia, elaborately stamped in gilt and blind, a little rubbed, joints split, folio, 1826. ⁂ One of the finest illustrated books of its time, the views are of coastal scenes from Cornwall to the Thames.

Herbal.- Parkinson (John) Theatrum Botanicum, first edition, additional engraved title by W. Marshall incorporating portrait of the author (trimmed and bound as frontispiece), over 2700 woodcut illustrations, errata leaf at end, 4L1 with 2" piece missing from upper edge with loss to headline on both sides, a couple of other leaves trimmed close at head and just touching headline, 6J6 with tear (partially repaired) affecting woodcut on both sides, occasional light water-staining and a few minor burn-holes, generally clean and crisp, later blind-stamped red morocco, spine ruled in gilt and with gilt stag device at foot, a little rubbed, headcaps worn, [Henrey 286; Hunt 235; STC 19302; Nissen 1490], folio, by Tho. Cotes, 1640. ⁂ A very good and complete copy of one of the great early English herbals. Provenance: contemporary ink ownership signatures of Robert Parker (head of engraved title, trimmed), John Hyphantos (title), later signature of Samuel Hadfield and date 1812 (front free endpaper) and bookplate of Old Hall (probably Mottram Old Hall in Longdendale).

London.- Mudge (Lt. Col. William) Four Ordnance Survey maps covering the environs of London, numbered I, VI, VII, and VIII, showing from Great Marlow to the mouth of the River Medway, and East Grinsted to St. Albans, engravings, four sheets, each approx. 655 x 970 mm. (25 3/4 x 38 1/4 in), dissected and mounted onto linen, with silk edges, minor off-setting and browning, each folding into contemporary calf wallet-style slip-case, blind tooled, with black morocco label to spine, gilt, rubbed and worn, [1805-1822].

China.- Alexander (William) The Costume of China, first edition, additional aquatint title and 48 plates, all hand-coloured, list of subscribers, some light offsetting, lacking half-title, contemporary aubergine straight-grain morocco, elaborately tooled in gilt and blind, g.e., slightly rubbed at extremities, [Colas 74; Lipperheide 1527; Abbey, Travel 532], 4to, 1805. ⁂ An excellent copy. Alexander accompanied Macartney's Embassy to the Chinese Emperor as a draughtsman from 1792-94. As well as costumes, the plates depict buildings, ships and other vessels.

India and The First Anglo-Sikh War.- Allen & Co. (William H.) Map of India, from the most recent Authorities, showing from modern-day Afghanistan to Myanmar, and including Sri Lanka, engraved map, by [?]J. Walker, with hand-colouring, and contemporary pen and ink notations relating to East India Company battles, including The Battle of Mudki, The Battle of Ferozeshah, The Battle of Ulleewul, and The Battle of Sobraon, the latter is further inscribed: 'Sir H. Gough Feb. 10/46/ attacked and defeated 36,000 Sikhs with a loss of 10,000 & all their Guns. Our loss was 2383 killed & wounded out of a force of 20,000 men. Sir H. Hardinge present', 970 x 850 mm. (38 1/8 x 33 1/2 in), dissected and mounted on linen, some spotting and browning, with minor offsetting, folding with buff endpanel into contemporary gilt and blind tooled boards, splitting to spine, worn, 8vo, 1844. ⁂ The First Anglo-Sikh War was fought between the Sikh Empire and the East India Company between 1845 and 1846. It resulted in partial subjugation of the Sikh kingdom.

Photography.- Loecherer (Alois) Two parts of the colossal statue "Bavaria" prepared for transportation, two salt prints from calotype negatives, 278 x 243mm. (11 x 91/2 in.) and 243 x 255 mm. (91/2 x 10 in.), on original card mounts within ruled borders, Loecherer's blind-stamp "A. Loecherer/Photograph/in Munchen" at lower right of images and on mounts below, both inscribed verso in German and apparently priced "8 frcs" each, 1850. ⁂ The head of the statue and the lion standing on the pedestal, each on a wooden base for transportation from the foundry to the site in front of the Hall of Fame, Theresienwiese, in Munich. The bronze statue was commissioned by Ludwig I of Bavaria and stands over 18 metres high. Loecherer's images are among the earliest examples of photo-reportage in Germany.

Mountaineering.- Fellows (Charles) A Narrative of an Ascent to the Summit of Mont Blanc, first edition, half-title with presentation inscription from the author, lithograph vignette title, 11 plates, all but one lithographs, lithograph facsimile, directions to binder slip at end, occasional foxing, contemporary pink calf, elaborately stamped in gilt and blind, titled in gilt on upper cover, g.e., covers spotted and slightly soiled, rubbed at edges, [Neate F18; Meckly 71], 4to, [Privately Printed], 1827. ⁂ A fine copy of one of the key books in any mountaineering collection, describing the 14th ascent of Mont Blanc by Fellows and his companion, William Hawes. This copy also has a manuscript list of the successful ascents of the mountain, written in French, from the first in 1786 by Paccard and Balmat to the 30th in 1846 (n.b. Fellows and Hawes listed as 13th). Further loose insertions comprise a manuscript certificate confirming an 1846 ascent by two English climbers and their guides, signed by all the guides at end and stamped by the Comune di Chamonix; and a newspaper cutting describing the 1855 ascent by Henry Clark.
