Pasquinade.- Dialogo di Marforio e di Pasquino, manuscript in Italian, in an italic hand, title and 148pp., last 13pp. later and in a different hand, pen and ink figure "Italy in Chains" laid down on f., title and first 3pp. and last 11pp. at end loose, slightly browned, contemporary limp calf, blind stamped centre pieces on both covers, slightly creased and darkened, sm. 4to, 1620 and 1625.⁂ The manuscript contains a dialogue between Marforio and Pasquino, from the point of view of an Italian, on the political events of the time. These events cover the ambitions of Spain and the reasons for Hungary and Bohemia expelling King Ferdinand II, Holy Roman Emperor, in 1618 when they set up the Elector Frederick V of the Rhineland Palatinate and began the Thirty Years War.Provenance: From the Library of Barbara Reynolds (1914-2015), Italian scholar, lexicographer, and translator.

A second, enlarged edition appeared in 1629 under the title Microbiblion.... Rare; ESTC lists only 3 UK copies (BL and 2 at Oxford) and 4 in America.

The third, first published in 1671, is one of the earlier books offering advice to those in more humble circumstances, while the last was a popular work by the physician and health reformer Percival, who campaigned for better conditions for factory-workers in Manchester.

University Life at Oxford.- [Penton (Stephen)] The Guardian's Instruction, or, The Gentleman's Romance. Written for the Diversion and Service of the Gentry; Particularly those Educated in Oxford or Cambridge, first edition, variant with gatherings in 6s, with initial imprimatur leaf and final contents leaf, slight worming to lower margin but otherwise a good clean copy, contemporary sheep with small thistles in blind to corners, rubbed, a couple of small wormed patches to lower cover, rebacked, [Wing P1439a], 12mo, for the Authour, and sold by Simon Miller, 1688.⁂ Interesting work on polite conduct including an entertaining cameo of life at Oxford in the 17th century, with scurrilous details of undergraduate activities. The author also describes the perfect wife, "she should be beautiful, and not proud; well-shap'd, and not stiff, familiar but not fond, good natured but not easie...", and notes that "mothers should have NO say in the education of their children". One of 3 variants of the first edition, this the rarest with only 4 UK copies listed by ESTC.

He was the recipient of over 400 letters from his father which were edited and published by his widow, Eugenia Stanhope after both father and son had died. The supplement to the letters is one of 4 editions published in the same year, this one being one of only 3 UK copies listed by ESTC with 6 more in America.

STC 5074; Pforzheimer 175; Grolier 41], small folio, [c.1550]; sold not subject to return. ⁂ One of four variants of the undated fourth collected edition, which was published simultaneously by four London booksellers (William Bonham, Richard Kele, Thomas Petit and Robert Toye). It is the last edition of Thynne's highly regarded version of The Workes. Thynne held a number of offices at the Court of Henry VIII, including chief clerk of the kitchen, who was in charge of all royal banquets.

Second folio edition, also known as the 'Great She Bible', it has Ruth 13:15 as, "she went into the citie". In this copy, the misprint in Matthew 26:36, where the name of "Judas" appears rather than "Jesus", - "then cometh Judas with them unto a place called Gethsemane..." - remains uncorrected (often found with a corrected over-slip laid down over the error).

Frances Wolfreston's copy.- [Lupton (Thomas)] A thousand notable things of sundrie sorts: vvhereof some are wonderfull, some strange, some pleasant, diuers necessary, a great sort profitable, and many very precious, woodcut head-pieces and decorative initial, contemporary ink recipes to endpapers and occasional marginalia, K3 small piece from lower blank corner, M8 outer margin torn with loss, water-stained, some spotting, browned, contemporary blind-ruled calf, rebacked, corners worn, lightly stained, rubbed, [STC 16961], 8vo, Printed by Iohn Haviland, for Robert Bird, 1631.⁂ Owned by a seventeenth-century woman book collector. Frances Wolfreston (1607-1677) is a rare example of a woman from the ordinary rungs of society who formed a substantial book collection. She focused on English literature and drama. The majority of the books remained in family ownership until 1856, when most were sold at Sotheby's. The Bodleian holds her copy of Shakespeare's Venus and Adonis, 1593, making her one of the earliest known women readers of Shakespeare. Provenance: 'Frances Wolfreston, her bouk' (ink inscription to front inner board); her husband Francis Wolfreston (inscriptions and pen trials to front free endpaper), it is interesting to note that this work was published in the year of their marriage; 'Ex libris D Wyndham Smith, Inkberrow, Worcester WR7' (blind-stamp to front free endpaper); J. Timothy Kenrick (armorial bookplate to front inner board).

Frejus (Roland de) The Relation of a Voyage made into Mauritania, in Africk ...to Muley Arxid King of Tafiletta..., 2 parts in 1 vol., first edition in English, with 5pp. advertisement at end, browned, one or two small rust-spots, E8 of first part missing small portion from lower margin, front free endpapers detached, later calf with border in gilt and blind, rubbed, rebacked with gilt spine, corners repaired, [Wing F2161], small 8vo, by W. Godbid, and are to be sold by Moses Pitt, 1671.⁂ Rare, early work of North African exploration in order to develop French trade, translated from the French work published the previous year. The first part gives an account of the journey to Morocco and through Mauritania while the second part, titled 'A Letter in answer to divers Curious Questions concerning the Religion, Manners, and Customs...', provides more detail of the people and society including wildlife, foods, and the method of making wine used in the Jewish communities. Only 2 copies have appeared at auction since 1977, in 1985 and another in these rooms in 2019.

Einschübiger, von Flammleisten begleiteter Unterbau, den kastenförmigen Korpus tragend, welcher durch zwei Schwingtüren geschlossen ist, die außen durch Flammleistenkartuschen dekoriert sind und an den Seiten zwei Tragebügelhenkel aufweisen. Die Türen innen mit großen Bildfeldern geschmückt. Inneneinrichtung mit acht Schüben und einer zentralen Tür, welche innen einen Spiegel zeigt und mit einem Schachbrettboden und gekanteten Spiegeln als Spiegelkabinett hinterfangen ist, die Spiegel teilweise blind. Die Schubfächer durch rot hinterfangenen Schildpatt getrennt und durch Flammleisten gegliedert. Die Schubfächer und auch die Tür mit mythologischen Szenen geschmückt, besonders fein die in den Türen eingesetzten Malereien, welche sicherlich von einem weiteren Maler stammen. Condition Report: Marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use, Some old chips and splits. Some losses to veneers. Old veneer repairs to areas around drawers. It appears that a section of moulding sat to the underside of the central blind drawer but is now lacking. Mirror plate is likely a replacement but has some age and small grey spots. One of the dolphin supports with a old glued repair to a split through the curved tail. A area of the back board to one side is an old replacement.
